Oh I dunno really to be honest with ya mate.. i had a clunk for a few days driving everyone telling me transfer box, so checked that and its all good.. went down the road 2 days ago heard some jingling about, next minute BOOOOM it was all doom lol, it even cracked the casing around the planet gears! new diffs a good'n :D (touch wood fingers crossed etc etc)!!!

Iv done this a few times now. Just ordered a locker to replace it with this time. Although it can happen on the road its usually caused from damage off roading. If you "wind" the diff possibly when a wheel is airborne or in soft mud then suddenly get traction there is a huge amount of force put through the planet gears usually resulting In the gear failing which in turn causes the pin to shear when lumps of metal get stuck between the gears.

Hope your new diff lasts you longer than mine have. Do you do much off roading? If so it may be worth investing in a 4 pin diff. Much stronger than the 2 pin ones.

It really depends how much you want to down as there are lots of options. You can buy a reconditioned diff will all genuine bearings and seals with a new 4 pin unit in it for £400.

That or if you've got the money for just under £900 you could get a reconditioned diff with Ashcroft sir locker fitted and a compressor. It is also a 4 pin diff unit but gives you the option to lock it when your on rough terrain or really challenging bits.
