I jacked it up just high enough for the wheels to clear the ground as you need to take a wheel off to remove one of the drive shafts. Axle stands rear corners of the chassis, I'll take some pictures before I refit it. There's plenty of room when you take the exhaust off.

Cheers, so it sounds like I can take out any (one) drive shaft and that'll give enough room to pull the diff from the driveshaft on the other side once the diff is loosened.
I know I had issues when trying to do my haldex filter/oil, the prop shaft was a right pain and I left it on in the end.
 
Yes the drive shaft was much easier than the prop, just 3 bolts on the hub and it will pull clear, then lower the diff on a jack once down remove the other shaft and pull it clear. There's a good Russian video on YouTube, removing and rebuilding the diff. Does your haldex have a large damper on the flange?

Can't recall, mines the 3rd gen haldex. Haldex pump had seized in, not ideal but had to drain it by suction. Not sure I'd attempt to rebuild the diff myself if i'm honest, never done one.
 
Diff rebuilt, and Haldex serviced, ready to be refitted tomorrow. Pictures to follow, I ended up changing the inner bearing it looked a bit rough so didn't want to risk it. Haldex pump was really dirty.
 
Refitted this morning it took 2hrs can't believe how quiet it is even the missus noticed, I'll attach pictures any questions feel free to ask. Thanks for all the advice fellas.

Thanks for photos, how much needs unbolting on the nearside rear suspension?
 
Only 3 nuts and bolts, strange size though 18 & 21 mm, tight as well so make sure you have a power bar. Really very easy, I'd be more worried about the prop.
 
I'll see what the inner bearing is like when I take it down. To buy a clutch plate is £70 and no guarantee that it will fit, I may as well spend £124 on the tool and sell it on afterwards.

Did you ever sell your diff tool?
I'm now in the situation where the diff has seized, and need a tool to remove the nut.:eek:

I can sell it for £75 if you collect or £80 including postage used once still in the box. The nut was extremely tight even using a 3/4" ratchet. Cheers.
 
I can't belive how dirty the haldex oil is, never seen it that black n gelled like..are LR actually servicing these? What's the service interval on a haldex these days, on VW was around 60k but having said that when the 1st cars had haldex fitted, vw didn't know about the haldex hence it wasn't serviced until problems arrived.. then low n behold is was now a serviceable item.

Strange at the time because they sold the oil and filter for the service, just a lot of dealerships didn't know about it. Hence it was missed.

150k miles/10 years, same as all other drive train fluids.
 
That's way to much for a haldex service, and in my opinion too much for a rear diff service...unless LR have some magic self healing fluids..

It's basically forced component failure, and lots of manufacturers do it. It looks good for fleet buyer's, where service costs are low.
In my experience, the components generally fail before the fluid change is due, simply because this poor mechanical component is having to survive on fluids that have long since degraded to the point of uselessness.

I change fluids at 2 year intervals, so they're always fresh.
