Hi,

Can I replace the rear diff bearings on my p38 and reuse the shims on the crownwheel bearings where they came out of? Are there shims on the pinion bearings?
Ta

You can if you know what your doing, if you don't, it is not recommended to play with the diff. They have to be set up correctly. Mesh, back lash and pre loads.

if you use genuine timken bearings shims for pinion should be right ,one behind inner bearing race does pinion height one on pinion does preload for bearings ,carrier bearings after replacement are set by winding adjuster against bearing on crown wheel side so that backlash between crown wheel and pinion is just removed ,other side is adjusted till backlash is restored 8 thou approx ,mark carrier caps before removal

Yeah, thanks, I was hoping you wouldn't say that but kinda knew you would. To be on the safe side I reckon I'll get a garage to do it if I can give them the diff on the bench. How likely is it that the crownwheel and pinion will have escaped damage..........the whine is still a whine, not grinding or growling. Thanks again for your thoughts:)

Ahh, hopefully good news then, will get finger out and get bearings, then try and find a garage with engineering ability rather than just fitters. Can you get shim packs in case any additional shims are required when reassembling?

To be honest i don't think a lot of mechanics these days will know how to do one. Specially at main dealers. It's old out new in i am afraid.

Have found an older guy who runs a small outfit at H.M.S. (Hillend Motor Services near Dalgety Bay in Fife To sort the diff bearings. He confidently discussed setting preload, backlash etc and has the presses and pullers to do the job. Additionally he is happy to receive the diff unit on the bench and reckons about an hour to do the 4 bearings. :):):) I appreciate that this may constitute advertising and I will take any corrective advice from the moderators regarding this but if these guys are getting thin on the ground we need to be sharing the gen. Now, where can the best deals regarding bearing and seal kits be obtained?:scratching_chin:

You can maybe get kits from Ashcroft transmissions or Crowndiffs. Do a search think Crown do bearing kits.

Do you not have Timken numbers James? A lot cheaper for a bearing factor than from wand wover i would guess?

no not for the pinion brgs at the moment its been a year since i did a p38 one carrier brgs numbers are outer lm102910 inner lm102949

Ain't done a diff for years. Still got me trusty spring balance and DTI though. Oh and a tube of blue somewhere.:):)
