How bad are the aftermarket ones? Anyone used the suffix G or OEM ones without any problems?
Turner Engineering sell this one LINKY and it says it's redesigned to be better than the LR ones and the reviews are great. It's expensive. :eek: Doesn't say who makes it though?
I think mine was still ok,

but obviously I need to change it as it's done a lot of miles.
I've been doing a bit of Googling and read about many leaking soon after being fitted. Don't know if these were basic aftermarket, cheap OEM or what?
 
Its not dear if it doesnt leak, redoing rear seals is a pita which makes 30 quid look like a bargain.

It's £42.30 with the VAT. ;) I know you are right. I was hoping to get a lot of responses saying their suffix G or their cheap OEM one had lasted for donkeys years. :) Just trying not to spend nearly four times the price for something I might not need to. I live in hope :rolleyes:

My rear crank seal is different to yours as Ihave the 2.5NA flywheel housing on mine which is just a large circular one mounted into the housing, whereas yours is in its own housing,......but I bought a genuine Land Rover seal from a Land Rover main dealer.....fitted it correctly, and it still leaked like a sieve.....cost about £27-28 something like that.

Keith Gott Land Rover who are an independent and well respected Land Rover stockist, service and repair garage, sell an aftermarket rear seal which is nearly twice the price, but pretty much guaranteed not to leak.....fitted that one in the same way, and true to their word, no leaks....

Genuine is not necessarily better.....
 
Are you on commission for Britpart G stuff? ;) Do you have experience of them lasting a long time, James?
lol, no but how much do you want to spend , theyve worked ok for me , no one can guarantee any part will last , th best parts are allways current production 300 tdi isnt by many years even lr are having reproductions made

Not sure what you meant at the end there, James. Do you mean LR have ran out of genuine 300Tdi parts and are using aftermarket?

when they are in production they buy high numbers ,small numbers for the parts department 17 years later
 
So that's why genuine are so expensive, rare? Or, is it cos they are miles better?
they are after market parts but generally better than pattern,cost isnt a reflection in genuine parts where i used to work we built stuff for lr ie small number axles etc for their parts trade using their supplied parts by a cost to them plus 20% and when you compared that to their retail prices there wasnt allways a direct relationship to their cost

Do you think LR have ran out of most original 300Tdi parts?
 
The problem I have seen with replacement 300 rear crank seals leaking shortly after being fitted is not with the seal itself but with the gasket of and the seal housing itself not sealing to the block correctly.A good quality gasket and sealant onto a clean surface helps a lot. The lack of a fixing bolt along the bottom of the unit is a bad design feature.
 
Is the 300 seal the same as the current 200 one ie it has to be fitted dry as any oil/grease will cause it to leak pdq?
 
I had no end of trouble with mine leaking changed it 3 times,the last time for a 'genuine' one,still leaked.So I chucked the gasket away & fitted it with silicone sealant......
No more leaks.;)
