Bejesus and futtocking banshees. And ruddy eck as well.

Had a glance at the rear brake shoes a few weeks ago and thought 'not bad linings, the pistons work and aint leaking, have another look in 12 months'.

Ang on a mo. Theres no return springs. Muppets.

Got the new springs out today and whipped off the wheels and drums. The springs are indeed there hidden behind everything.

Ahh well lets pop the new ones on while im about it..

What a ruddy performance. Having hands like 4lb of badly wrapped sausages and backed up to the waineylap whilst sitting on sharp gravel is not the best way to attack these babies. What a faff. Took me ages.

Beer oclock..............

I think this translates to:

"I say chaps....

The reason my rear brakes are like brand new is because they don't work because the springs were not fitted properly.

As such, I spent a pleasant afternoon on my drive using my oversized hands to fit some new springs, with sharp gravel tormenting my arse". :)

It's sooo much quicker if you take the hub and bearing off, only takes a minute to remove if you've got a hub socket and the hubs are always worth greasing and resetting anyway...

If you're in a real hurry you don't even need to get the drum and hub to separate just take the hub nuts out and lift the wheel, drum, hub off together...

Took me a bit to parse it - but I must say the translation just does not have the flavour of the original. :)

Waineylap? Not familiar with that.

On the subject of the brakes, though, I do agree it's much easier with the hub off. This way you can pressemble the shoes and springs and put them in without having to bugger round with the springs in situ. A large pair of mole grips for levering the shoes into place is a godsend as well - grab the bit of the shoe with no brake lining on it and the extra leverage makes it much easier to stretch the springs into place.

must admit, the first time I did the rears on the s1 I used the bustersbus how to in the fender section as a reference, didn't really fancy taking the hub off - mainly out of fear as I didn't really know what I was doing - but I might have a go at it when I do the s3 it is a bit fiddly getting the bottom springs on, I tend to put the spring on and then put the linings in place with a bit of cussing :D

My sincere apologies.

Due to the capacious proportions of said metacarpus extremities, the voluminosity of a laptop keyboard and my parsimonious education, I should have transcribed the colloquy;

Waney lap. (fencing)

That, an I'm a bit numb.................. :D

The top spring only attached to one shoe via the rear adjustment peg. The other end sitting round a peg attached to the rear plate. The whole spring sits under the slave cylinder and behind the adjuster cam.

I poked it round the back of the cam and managed to sit it in the groove on the adjuster peg in situe with the aid of a screwdriver. Whilst Keeping a bit of torsion on the other end I hooked the old spring onto it and pulled the lot near the other peg. Just a case of pushing it into place then with long nosed pliers.

I think that was my 278th attempt. :(
