Returned the brake shoes which were the correct ones, for refund, got a set from jgs4x4 and they went on without any drama.

So was the fault with the shoes or the pins?

For some reason the stand off ( the bit the spring clips go on ) on the shoes was a couple of mil higher making the pins too short.
