Anyone got a fairly original 200tdi and fixes it ?

Mine is original for the most part and has the axle with 13 (I think ) diff and drum brakes

It’s leaking diff oil onto the outside of both rear wheels.

My local Landy garage said it was either the plastic cap or a gasket which I bought. They said if anything else was leaking it would be on the inside of the wheel as well.

My friends say it’s a big job and the brakes and everything else needs removing because the oil is coming from the shaft and will be something in there. So they didn’t fit the gasket.

The seal to the prop was also leaking but it was fixed today.

We did wonder if the extended breathers were blocked but we checked that last month and again today.

She is used mainly for green laning

Any thoughts ?

Not big job, just messy!

Hub seals are not a big job, make sure you use Corteco seals and if the stub axle is worn change it or you will be doing it again. Don't ask me how I know!
While you are there either clean the bearings or fit some new ones.

Might just be the rubber hub caps have failed together. Replace with genuine!

I had a similar with oil spatter round the rim and tyre. No oil on the hub flange. Turned out the rubber boot was split and it was flinging melted grease out.

If leaking on the outside only as said by garage it will be either the rubber/plastic end cap or the gasket between drive flange and hub. Yours will be like mine [ a 1990 truck] where oil from the diff migrates along the half shaft and lubricates the drive splines and hub bearings. Later models have seal on shaft and rely on grease in the hub.
A blocked breather will result in oil being forced out as it heats up, usually some will get past the hub seal on the inside and contaminate brake shoes. so double check the breather.
Decent end caps for older models [ size changed with 300tdi I think] hard to find so I have gone to using series metal caps with a smear of sealer on my Ninety.

Thank you everyone. I’ll have a good look at the rubber caps tomorrow. I’ve bought hub oil seals and gaskets in case we need to replace them too
