Hi, I have a 2000 TD5 Auto 2.5 that I bought at the start of the year.
It has slowly been losing power and now (when cold) it struggles to get up any hills. It also doesnt seem to change gears at the correct time (sometimes going up to 4000 revs.
It sometimes used to go into limp mode and it has increasingly happened over the past few months.
In a 10 mile drive the car went into limp mode 3 times. Once I turned the engine off and back on it was fine until it happened again and again.

I had the car read and it was showing that there was a problem with the air flow sensor so I bought a new OEM MAF sensor.
When that did not solve the problem I checked the intercooler to find that it was completely broken. I bought a new original part and replaced that.

The problem is still there with the high revs, low power and limp mode.
I have been told that the turbo is fine when I got the car read.

I've had it suggested that it may be the XYZ switch or low gearbox oil but this is way past my knowledge and replacing parts to try and find a fix is starting to get expensive.

Has anyone got any idea what the problem could be?

New gearbox oil would be a good idea if you don't know when it was last done. Even if it's not the problem, you don't want it to be your next problem.
Was it LR diagnostics that was used or a generic one?

It was LR diag. No other codes.

I wouldn't know where to start with the gearbox oil on an auto haha

there are loads of excellent tutorials on there. changing the gearbox oil isn't really difficult. its a bit of a faff but you don't really need any technical knowledge to do it, like many jobs on a D2. i've done a fair few jobs on mine which seemed pretty daunting but once i got into them, turned out to be easy (if long-winded!) and its satisfying to do some of these jobs yourself. all you need is a decent socket set and a few other simple bits and pieces for most jobs. on my two D2's i've done water pump, rad and intercooler, thermostat, tailgate hinge, crankshaft pulley, brakes and a few other bits, on my D1's i did wheel bearings, discs, swivel ball bearings, door lock springs..... the list goes on... and i'm no mechanic and i've only got basic tools. you'd be surprised what you can do if you try.

Would recommend finding someone with a hawkeye or nanocom that can record live data and then post the file on here to see if there are any strange things visible.

Cheers

no fecker has got one near me! i'm probably going to have to pay for the priviledge (unless you fancy a drive to sussex :D) - got the 3 amigos which i think is a front hub. also today, on top of that (and my recent crankshaft pulley change) got the tell-tale ticking under load of snapped manifold studs!:mad:

There are a few closer.....to you......but I was actually referring to the OP. ...............LOL.

You have to stop breaking your Discos..it is not good.....LOL.

lol, i know you were but i was just saying...
anyway, i'm not breaking them, they do that fine without my help!

in fact, i think my disco is a sentient being with a warped sense of humour. every time i fix something, it says "well done... now fix this!" (whilst giving me the automotive equivalent of the middle finger..)

That is a Land Rover thing, I think they all decide to do that at some point, Just for fun! and then sometimes out of pure vindictiveness.:p.I know mine does.

oh they do! and some jobs are a right arse to do! who would have thought, to change the crankshaft pulley, you have to start by removing the indicators!

Nope. it's got me confused.
Yes...very odd. I know you have said about the turbo being tested and all good, but the intercooler hoses can delaminate from inside, causing the hose to kind of suck in and restrict power, but usually you get white smoke as a result.

A little update on this.
I bought some new silicone tubes to do a wastegate solenoid bypass.
Still going into limp mode and is still going to 4k revs before changing gear.
My next guess would be gearbox oil or XYZ Switch.
Starting to hate the thing now haha.

Hello
In the past I also had a td5 automatic and had similar issues with the gearchange. From 1st to 2nd sometimes changed only over 3500rpm.
I was told that most probably an owerhaul will be needed but before that I gave him a try and changed oil 2 times (and used auto box additive). Issue solved.
2x change is needed to change most of the oil in the box.
