Mark1971 that's good information.

Would you keep us up to date on your conversion? Would be great to hear about.

Some good information here. Same engine was fitted to the Migs. Inside the 2.5TD ECU

Just check what you can get and make sure you don't overload the gearbox. Having had my manual gearbox out I would say it isn't for the faint-hearted.

Got a feeling the manual gearbox is already close to its limit, maybe 10 - 15% off? Cannot remember why I thought that though. Having had the gearbox out once I decided I wasn't going to chip it, just in case!

That would be great. I'm trying to compile a thread with as much info about remapping as possible all in one place.

Should have a word with langley, his dse is chipped with uprated intercooler and boost wound up,i'm sure its langley? He also has the 4.6 box but he also has a modded torqe converter...I only want a bit extra poke for towing and the 4.6 box will just simply cope better with the extra load/strain

My 1998 DSE running on a PSI power box, its done nearly 177k and used for towing our tourer in summer months, auto gearbox starting to show signs of clutch/valve block probs but still going strong for now..the 4.6 v8 box will fit as long as you get the later 1 with the last 3 digits on serial number ending in 065 some are 061 and think that box is 15mm too long, its defo the 1 ending 065! You need to use the diesel bell housing and torque converter and simple swap.I know as I'm just about to do same job and spoke to mr ashcroft 2 days ago to confirm info on 4.6 box swap ;)
Either version of the HP24 will fit, the different lengths are accomodated by a different spacer that comes with the box.

Dave didnt say both would fit, I just simply asked the question of the 065 being a straight swap keith ;) I also asked a local transmission place about uprating my TC and he said in his opinion he wouldnt as it would change the characteristics of the box? And might spoil the drive? Dave didnt advise me to upgrade the TC but I didnt ask him it was needed

I don't care what Dave said, the HP22 is shorter than the early HP24. So it would fit, it has a spacer between the end of the box and the transfer box, the HP24 has a thinner spacer by 15mm, so either box will fit.
Ascrofts do an uprated torque convertor that has less slip, expensive though. It will not change the characteristics of the box, but it will certainly change the drive characteristics.

Keith, dave did not say the others would not fit,he simply answered the question of the 065 box being a straight swap apart from TC and bell housing..the info I had about the 061 box was from a post on here as I was going through previous threads/posts to find a answer...
Now 1 thing I need to know now which was never mentioned by dave, is do I need to swap pumps on the 065 box as im picking 1 up the weekend??

so how do you know which gear box you have and what other things can you do to get better performance without remaps

If you have a 4.0 or a diesel and you haven't changed it you have a ZF4HP22. If you have a 4.6 you have a ZF4HP24

I have mine chipped, a uprated intercooler, more boost from turbo and and also the uprated torque converter from Aschrofts.
The thing is in the way you drive.
My driving is relaxed and i never push it from a standing start.
As Datatek has mentioned in other threads, the biggest problem with the autobox is when it requests the torque reduction for upshift. After remaping, even with the torque reduction, there is still to much torque avaiable for a smooth upshift. That is more noticed when upshifting from 1 to 2, so i always take care with when moving from a standing start.
On the other hand, the Disco Td5 also uses the HP22 autobox and some guys here at landyzone and at a aussie forum have Discos Td5 with around 400nm.

You will not know about the pump until you get the box, some are a straight swap some need the pump changed. I do not know at what point the pump changed.

So,it's looking like a remap has a lot of benefits. More power more tourqe and a increase in mpg. (Which we knew)

And it seems some people are running them without issue.

So maybe it would be worth going ahead and having it remapped but not thrashing it to death in the low gears especially and if the worst does happen then replace the box with a 4.0 or 4.6 petrol box?

Hmmm food for thought.

Keep your experiences with chips/remaps coming.

4.0 gearbox is the same as the diesel so it would have to be a 4.6 gearbox.

Don't think you have been listening have you?

Thanks jacckk

Seems the way to go I guess. What would a second hand 4.6 box be and how hard/many hrs labour roughly would be involved?
