Moved the caravan and got the disco up on my level bit of drive ready for hubs etc

Quick wash before I left for work

It's in good shape under all that dirt :D

Couple of light scratches/scuffs in the lacquer that'll polish out if they bug me enough. Couple of stone chips bubbling up on rear quarter. Not bad for the age!

Didn't want to come to work in the beemer ;) the missus has already drove the disco more in 3 days than she did the defender in 6 months

Looking very nice mate. I’m going to do service on mine today oil fuel filter and that other oil filter. and that turbo pip you provided :) ordered them brass plugs for bell housing front and rear so I’ll change all the oils in that when they come

Started the hubs today, got to exactly the same point on both and had to stop

That dirty bastard rounded off on me! Same bolt the other side as well

It was going so well :( oh well, 2 bolts to get out not too depressed :D

I'm getting some of those grip sockets tomorrow, I've got a set but only goes up to 14mm and I can't wield the hammer in there. If they don't work plan is to use a slitting disc to cut the head of the bolt off because as far as I can see, the thread is only in the hub flange, not the knuckle. So it should just pull out with the hub..? Please shout up if I'm wrong or I'll be royally f***ed ;)

Otherwise, it's been ok. Bit scary jacking one of these up for the first time

How you got on today @bane1985

Were you using 12 point sockets on that? 6 point are betterer
Always hate it when you are ready to get something done and something like that happens.
Got luck with tomorrow’s efforts:)

@1988smithy ,

Hi mate and know exactly how u feel when I had to replace my upper wishbone , they are ==&&#&@&@*@& to get out , took me 2 x days trying to cut through the bolts , the actual bolt itself rusts solid inside the metal sleeved Bush

Indeed a thin slitting disc is the way to go, u may cut the head off and find the actual bolt is rusted solid , I used the Irwin sockets along with 6 x sided sockets , wouldn’t budge an inch

Have u got any plus gas or a blow torch along with some drifts

I used some coppaslip , also like the ceramic grease

Found a dremel is good to use along with a cut off air tool

If i may Don’t forget when u jack it up, off road height , then pull fuse F26 in the engine bay, axle stands underneath , when u reinstall the fuse landy will drop to bump stops, start engine and will self level again

Hope u get on ok,

Wow @gstuart you went to town and showed it who the boss was.:):)

Don’t you just love the fact LR never heard of copper slip/ grease when they put these beast together:D

J

Thks , it’s one of the worst jobs I’ve had to do and indeed all because coppaslip wasn’t used in the beginning , soaked the new bolts with coppaslip

I got a small 50 x litre air compressor and came in very usefully , airsaw wouldn’t even touch it as the bolts were hardened steel

If u look at the pic the back bush was the worst due to lack of access

But still my favourite landy

Yep, fuse pulled mate and it's staying put which is good!

I've got plusgas mate yeah, not tried heat as it just rounded off soon as I tried to crack it. All the rest cracked off lovely. Think it's combination of 3foot bar and 12point socket not helping. I used a cheap 6 sided socket on the first 2 I undid and the wall of it snapped. They're feckin tight paddy!

It is one of the 4 bolts that hold the hub to the knuckle mate
Plan is if irwin sockets don't move it, cut the head off as long as it's only threaded in the hub flange, not the knuckle which I don't think it is

While you out buying your Irwins(not got any of them but have heard they are good) I would still say a good 6point stands a chance.

I quiet often break out my impact gun sockets as they are a little bit thicker walled 6 point.

J

You may find a decent flange drive ring spanner will get a grip on that as well,

Cheers

Got a set of good impact sockets, just no 15mm  there's always another tool you need to do a job on a landy lol

The one bolt is completely rounded but the other is ok, so maybe decent 6 sided socket will do. I'll have a look tomorrow cheers mate

I should know better, I've advised others on here to use 6 sided sockets but broke the only one I had so forged ahead with 12point :(

It'll all come out in the wash anyway!

Some good work there, yours is defo a keeper!

term might be wrong, they pick up on the flats of the bolt head rather than the corners. Various suppliers use different names for the same thing.

Cheers

I've searched flange and flank drive, the ring end is 12 point is that right?

Edit crows foot..?

Yep , the set I have are 12 sided. So will not work on a fully rounded bolt, but do work on some that the previous owner butchered a wee bit. The name I was thinking of was flank, but flange popped into my head..LOL.
But if you can get one, I would try a 6 sided first.

Cheers
