Mark Hi,
I would say that your new injectors are letting more fuel into the engine
(since they are new and unblocked and function as they were supposed to).
As for the snorkel I can only say that on my 200Tdi engined Discos it
actually assists performance and lowers the fuel consumption.
It appears that the longer induction helps on torque. (I remember reading
something about it but it is supposed to only work when the increase in the
induction happens between the intake manifold and the intake valves. Any
comment from fellow listers specialized on this topic would be extremely
appreciated)
The obvious thing though is that the snorkel lets much colder and cleaner
air inside the air filter housing when compared to the air that is usually
drawn inside the air filter from inside the engine compartment. And as we
all know colder air is richer in oxygene and therefore provides better
combustion and better performance and lower fuel consumption (if the
air/fuel ratio is not changed)
On more bonus (already quoted above) of fitting a snorkel is that your
engine will be breathing cleaner air and this will have a very noticeable
effect you how frequently you will be changing your air filter elements.
Fitting a more freely flowing air filter element has also helped a lot on
both my engines.
I keep full fuel consumption records since the day I bought my cars and the
more freely flowing air filter (RamAir) together with the snorkel does make
a difference of about 4 to 5 per cent. In order to check that I had
disconnected the snorkels in the past only to reconnect them since the drop
in performance was immediately noticeable along with the increase in fuel
consumption and the speed of soiling of the air filter element.
Two more things that have also made some difference in the way the engines
feel and perform were the fitting of the FuelMax thingy (two pieces of very
strong magnet connected with a tie-rap over the fuel line a few inches
before it arrives to the fuel pump and adding SLICK50 to the oil once every
60.000 km.
A lot of people say that those things (the magnets and Slick50) are snake
oil but my personal experience is extremely positive with them.
Take care and HTH
