I have a series 2 TD5 which has a very loose bracket at end of transfer box between tb and hand brake. There are 3 studs into tb. 1 has sheared, 1 has stripped threads and the remaining one keeps working loose and enlarging the hole on the bracket. Various suggestions have been received ranging from "remove it as not required" to " it is there to prevent prop shaft being pushed forward into tb during serious off roading" Is there anyone who knows what it is there for and how to fix it please.

if you remove the damper you may find you an tell by extra vibration ,though it wont hurt driving like that ,which threads are stripped the ones into the ali ?they can easily be repaied with a 10mm helicoil

as James above mentioned,

this is a harmonic damper, I am not sure how necessary it is,

I would suggest removing it then go for a dive and see if you can tell the difference, if you cant then just leave it off, if you can then remove the handbrake and backplate and helicoil the treads and refit,

bolts are on the rear so not such an issue once hand brake assembly is removed 4 x 15mm headed bolts but you would want to drain oil and remove sump plate too
 
Is it really necessary to remove sump to helicoil?

Are these bolt "through" bolts into tbox/ gearbox?
 
usually they do go straight thgrough ,but if your going to helicoil and permantely fix the fault its not much more work
 
Many thanks to Dave and James and I will certainly remove and check the result. If need be I will then proceed to the further remedies. Also may thanks to the mad hat man for taking this on board.
