Hi All

Freelander 2, with 114K... wondering if you can help out here as I have a rattle from the passenger side front that I'm trying to track down. sounds like metal on metal but nothing is lose.
Its been getting worst for the last 12 months but now I need to find it. does it when you go over bumps or pot holes, but does not do it when you're braking.

I've checked the caliper and thats fine, so it leads me to think drive shaft or output shaft from the box.

If I get hold of the shaft when its jacked up, I can push is back and forth a tad as youd expect but the output from the box appears lose to me and when you turn the wheel back and forth, it kind of makes the noise I hear.

Common issue? what needs doing... and how much?... I have a video but not sure how to upload or even if I can

and thoughts? Thanks

How is the brake backplate? My RH one has become detached at the top, so rattles over bumps. It's on my todo list to remove it.

thats the type of noise, but no, everything checked, and the brake bit would have no impact on that I guess?

Was the actual back plate checked, or just the caliper? It's actually pretty common for the brake backplate to rust through, as they seem to be make of chocolate steel.

thats the thing. If it were a new backplate it could sound like that, but as its rusty and old, it won't make that sound now. I put a tie wrap on it to pull it back, went for a drive and still there. As I say, it stop when you brake, so if not the brake, it has to be the drive IMO

If it doesn't rattle when braking, could it be the slide pins are loose in the housing? If the pins are loose, then the caliper saddle will wobble unless the brakes are on, which then tightens the whole assembly up.

nothing on the caliper is lose at all?

ARB drop links at fault? At 114k I'd be surprised if it was a drive shaft.

I am hearing the exact same thing on my similar milage FR2. Did you get to the bottom of this issue?
