The more research I’m doing the more one particular answer keeps coming up and that’s the alternator pulley, I’ll do what’s suggested and get someone else to start it while you be got my head under the bonnet and pay special attention to the alternator, so if that pulley fails altogether my engine won’t be toast, is that right, thanks everyone for the interest shown in this topic

Like yourself i have seen lots of posts on this but i dont believe that i have seen an actual failure, of course it will eventually fail if not sorted sometime.
But on the FL2 the belt for the alternator does not drive the water pump or camshaft, so it will not toast the engine, you could pull in safely should it fail ( power steering will not work) - but again of course i would not drive it for miles like this.
Good old LR using TD4 for 2 different engines, just dont ask if the engine is ford/french or BM and if the timing gear is a belt or a chain - Stewart runs for cover....

Thanks for confirming that I really appreciate it, since I started this thread with the advice from everyone who responded and other research done on the interweb I have decided to change the Auxiliary drive belt myself, I’ve seen a few videos now on how to do it and before I was worried about accidentally moving the cam whilst doing it but completely stupidly of me hadn’t realised the timing belt was completely separate and had already been done professionally 2 years ago, so I am going to replace the Auxiliary drive belt, tensioner, idler and alternator pulley as soon as I get a weekend that’s above at least 10c in temperature, the FL2 does go for MOT next Friday but I can’t see a rattle on a belt being a failure and it stops when the engine is warm anyway so thanks once again for all the advice it’s much appreciated
