I'm after some ratchet straps to secure timber etc to my roof rack.

I've never owned a set of ratchet straps before, so I just wondered which do you use and where did you get them?

either nick them off artics, find them by the motorway, or buy some. The ones with metal ratchets and plastic straps are good usually
 
I used Draper ratchet straps in two sizes - they come in packs, 4 of the thinner ones and two of the wider ones from memory, they are a good length and seem pretty robust - the two wider ones joined together went up and over a marquee and held it down in high winds.
There are usually loads for sale on the stalls at landrover shows or car shows generally, agricultural or country shows as well
 
screwfix have a few different versions on sale, got a few different types, never had any problems unless you try something deliberately stupid with them
 
I bought 3 5ton ratchet straps for work the other day.95 quid!!!!!Get a strap thats rated(or more) to the load you wanna secure
 
Make sure someone shows you how to ratchet them up PROPERLY, and secure the loose end. Otherwise undoing them can be tricky or they might self-destruct.....:mad:

had a few know-it-alls working round me...know-f-alls....
 
Wow, you guys are hardcore for ratchet straps. I used a set of four ratchet straps from the local pound shop for a while. Until i secured them wrong, rubbed them on the wheels and frays two of them.

Have since bought slightly better ones from a stall at the Essex farmers show.

3 and half ton straps seems quite overkill for a few bits of timber on the roof.

I'm going to stay well clear of the cheap ones! Just didn't know if there was a well known make who everyone on here uses.

Anyway, I've got my eye on a couple on ebay. They are used, but from the haulage trade, so should be plenty strong enough for what I need them for. Failing that I'll buy some new 'uns from Damar/Greenhams.

I bought a whole load from Lidl a couple of years ago. We're in the removals business so we like to keep 40 or so in the big vans at any time.

Anyway, no worries at all with them at £1 each :) 5 in a bunch was even used last winter to pull the van out of the compound with it being a rwd transit in the snow lol!

RWD transits are easier to get going on snow than FWD ones.:eek:;):D
 
Got mine from a shop in Redruth called Macsalvors (I think thats right).
Excellent quality and prices.
Don't know if they do mail order
