So my 110 build is coming along and there are a few bits I wanted coated with Line-X however all the places even remotely local to me appear to have vanished! So that's out really. Next alternative is Raptor Upol, seen it in person an it should do exactly what I want just looking for some advice.

I'll have to buy a compressor, never used one, never needed one but I will for this as got a few parts I want done. So what should I be looking at? Apart from maybe buying a buzz gun in the future I don't see much else I would need it for bar painting so nothing too pricey. This suitable?

Secondly in regards to prep work, can it be sprayed directly onto things? For example a brand new roll cage? Or must I rough up the surface? Or would it be best to have to roll cage etc unpainted?

Any particular primer needed?

How do I go about painting galvanised surfaces?

How many coats as well?

Also how much would I need? Plan is to cover a DCPU roll cage, 110 rocksliders, steering guard, pick up cover, tubular front bumper, snorkel x2, wing chequer plate and a NAS rear step.

The reason why is things like steering guards, rock sliders, roll cages, snorkels, etc.. All look good when you fit them, few months later all scratched to buggery and needs repainting. The idea when using Raptor was to keep a smart finish that has some grip to it to aid traction (standing on sliders etc..) when mucky.

Sorry for all the questions, just literally never done anything like this. Only used an airbrush a couple times when i was kid, sprayed a few bits with rattle cans but thats it!

Thanks

Think the guy on landrover tv on you tube did a bit about spraying with raptor
A 50ltr compressor would be plenty, as you are only doing parts

Yeah you will need to give it a good key 160 I used. You only need primer if you go thru to bare metal then you will need a acid etch primer use upols works ok

Hi,

I also am going to be using Raptol, I got in touch with Upol directly and they answered some of my questions and sent me the instructions for the black and tintable spray. I have tried to attach it here but can't.

Like said above rub down and give a key, if needs be use some acid 8 etch primer, if spraying with an airline I think the pressure needs to be around 60psi but this depends on the texture you are wanting.

Air pressure, distance, temperature all play apart in the results,

Also once sprayed don't let any damp, moister get to the Raptor because it apparently will foam up.

Plenty of people, youtube, etc. spraying without masks, but, be aware that its an isocy... (2k) paint, and does give off nasties.

Your options are -

Wrap a scarf around your face, pretend the wind is blowing in the right direction, and gamble on dying of something else first.
or
Buy a time sensitive and disposable mask for the job
or
Buy a load of filters, and an air fed

1, 2, or 3. I dont think there is another option.

Cheers for the concern, I do have a proper filter mask and an S10 :p haha, so should be good. In all seriousness if im painting for a long period i will use a mask.

Thanks for the info guys. Ideally going for a relatively coarse finish on some parts but smooth on others. The one i tagged above is 110psi so should be up for the job

They are pretty cheap, cheers. I assume the usual white spirit to clean it off?

Was guna line the garage with paper n paint in there!

Try and get upol ummm.... bugger cant remember whats its called now think it was paint stripper in a larger can. As for how much you will need I used 2 bottle of black for the roof and front grill, door mirrors and and spare wheel cradle .Black goes a lot further the tintable . I use 6 bottles for the body and still I should have used a couple more and done another coat as its slight patchy in places. If you need to spray over any sealant take it off and use upol tiger seal as you can spray over the top of it

Gotcha. So 6 tins would be enough for what I want. Found 6 tins + gun for £80, pretty cheap, compressor £100, do the lot for considerably less than LineX too!
