Hi everyone, just finished taking the engine out of the 73' Range Rover and started stripping the engine down for a rebuild when i found the serial number. As far as I'm aware, the 15G means it's the gutless version from a 90 or 110? Can anyone shed some light on this? cheers

If by gutless you mean the 8.13:1 CR and lots of emissions related things, then yes!

15G00001 LandRover Defender 8.13:1 1981-85

If I recall correctly, its mostly air injection into the exhaust ports to reduce the emissions. Someone else may be able to provide more detail than me though.

yes you could fit h/c pistons and change carb needles etc
 
A 4.6 is appealing but because its getting restored I want to put the 3.5 in it. But to make it 'Rangie spec', high compression pistons will bring up the compression ratio up but will I need to do anything about the heads or can the original ones stay? Also on the carbys, its running the Zenith-Stromberg setup, thinking of just swapping them out for a set SU's
 
one needs to see spec of oe car..as in 73 it could av su's or strombergs..
also it could be 8.13...

as you restoing her it will never be correct as you dont av matching numbers ..ie oe engine is long gone...so fitting a 4.6 say with a holley on it wont detract from value..

does it av the palomar seats that are useable? dought it cos they are all fecked..again detracts fronm value...so in MY oppion one should make it as close as possible but update if nessary..ie give it some grunt..

also soon as it restored it IS NOT ORIGINAL..ie the inner panels , paint etc are non oe..so its a rebuild..not original..so in MY oppion why bother to make it so..??

so make it useable..make it fast..make it comfortable..imho (prehaps not to the extent i have gone..)

ill have a look at oe specs but 8.13 sounds a bit more like it.
Not interested in selling it or anything and it doesn't bother me that the block wont be matching numbers, I just want it to be fairly close to original spec... some non originality is okay but yeah I just like the old 3.5.
 
The zenith carbies are the 175 CD's... Can't find anything that tells me where they may come from so would they have been on the later 90/110 with the emissions stuff as stated above or are they earlier ones without all that, that would have come with an early Range Rover?
 
There may be a casting date on the inlet manifold. Could be two digits with so many dots around the outside. EG 81 with 6 dots around it would indicate it was cast in June 1981.

I think, or it might be just a date! I'll go and have a peak at mine in a bit. (Twin strombergs fitted to a 1988 RRC... long story...)
