I have a 99 P38 with 4.0 petrol mill and auto box. On cold mornings, on first start off, I have to drive on a slight uphill for about half mile. Gearbox doesn't want to shift above 2nd despite engine revs upto 3500rpm, as road levels out, box eventually shifts up and runs as normal for rest of day. Anyone had anything similar?
Thanks in advance.

I have had exactly the same and it only gets worse - it is the govenor sticking untill sufficient pressure has built up to kick it back to life - i gave my box a flush and put in a new filter and fluid and it now changes faultlessly no matter how cold it is!
Hope this is of help!

I'm thinking about doing this myself as I am having similar symptoms, changing is just not as smooth as a few days ago, and holding in gear sometimes- maybe not getting into 4th?- I too thought it was due to temps.. Did you DIY it or something for the garage?

Hi there, it was a reasonably easy DIY job (but being a mechanic i would say that!)
Im sure if you know your way around a spanner it will be a reasonably easy task!
P.S. dont go to land rover for the parts as you will find genuine LR filter kits on ebay for a third of the price that they will charge you (if you cant find the parts you need then let me know and i will contact the guys i got mine from!)
