Thinking of getting rid of my 2001 Disco TD5 GS and getting a RR 3.0 TD6 Vogue. My search still isn't working so after advise on possible issues/cost of ownership please.

Should I, shouldn't I, am I completely mad to even think about it etc etc.

I took the exact same step your considering (apart from I had a 2000 ES D2!)
I haven't looked back. The Rangie is a far more superior car in every way.
More to go wrong on the Rangie, yes miss the simplicity of the D2 occasionally but the pro's outweigh the cons IMO

Fuel consumption similar if an auto TD5 is what you have.
The TD6 is well documented for gearbox issues. Tend to last typically between 80-100k miles before rebuild.
The M57 TD6 Beema engine units are pretty bullet proof, change the crank case breather filter that will save the Turbo. Check for water ingress in the rear panels in the boot to save the electrics. (Common issue)
Make sure everything works.
Buy a good one and you'll love it
 
Thanks for the info rob. I do have a TD5 but as I only do around 6k a year in the car (and 6k on the bike) it's not a major issue. So if I get one that has had a recent gearbox rebuild that should see me ok for a long time.
How are they for rusting underneath? once the bike comes out in the warmer weather the car tend to sit on the drive all week which I think is what killed my Disco 300tdi and showing signs on the D2 chassis?
Also what are they like on the air suspension i.e. how often do the air springs need changing?
Can the suspension be lowered to make it easier for my 83 year old mother to get in? she struggles a lot on the D2, even with the step I carry.

So many questions, sorry!

No worries RE the questions.
Yes if gearbox has had a good quality re-con should last a while ( I would suggest changing fluid/filter regularly too to help pro long the life as much as possible, every couple of years if your only doing 6K P/A)
Resting underneath not too much of an issue, they will start flaking etc but not really any 'known' problem areas like the D2 rear chassis legs as far as I'm aware. Watch for corrosion/rust on the panels though and rear arches where door shuts on them.
Front Air struts I would hazard a guess around 8years give or take..... I changed mine (originals were on it and started leaking day before MOT!) they were over 12 years old so didn't do bad IMO.
The bags on the rear of mine as far as I know are still original....so over 15years old......

Yes you can put the suspension in access mode....think it drops 30 or so MM from normal ride height, there is a button on drivers door (for the chauffeur driver!) to drop into acces mode or the main suspension adjust or switch on the centre of the dash which SHOULD light up and tells you what height your currently in or if it's currently changing height.

Ensure it lights up correctly and raises fairly quickly in all heights, if it doesn't probably new compressor time. Compressor in the boot under floor with spare wheel in the well, you should barely hear it from from the drivers seat, noisey pump usually means old knackered pump unless it isn't secured properly - Check boot /spare wheel well / floor isn't wet/damp. Compressor about £300 for new WABCO, mine lasted around 12years from new before replaced (will differ significantly if it has leaks in the system over the years)

Depending on your mother's height and mobility, she may struggle and you will definitely still need the step. My 80yr old, 5'11, neighbour struggles to get in and more so out, of mine. I suggest you take her with you and test it. Neighbour has recently said he can no longer take a lift from me, for hospital appointments, as his hip can't take it any more.
 
@robhew86 thanks for that, other than the gearbox, parts don't seem too expensive. Think I'll set up a Rangie fund and wait till the right one comes along. The one I saw on the web was £2500 with 186k on the clock, there were a few advisories on the mot that I suspect hasn't been done (front disc and rear suspension bushes) which looking at the prices I could do for under £200, but looked in excellent condition.

@gold rover Thanks also, my mother is only around 5'4 so if she still needs a step then I can live with that as I don't take her out that often anyways (I'm not mean we just have a large family all with cars) and with the size of the boot I can always knock up some sort of ramp. Good idea to take her with me providing she takes her cheque book :).

Sounds like you want to get a toyboy, I'm not surprised he struggles to get in and out at 80 and only 5' 11.:D:oops:
