Hi All,
Have not been on here for quite a while now but I now have a 09 Range Rover Sport 3.6 V8. I lent it to my son to go back to London from Cornwall while I repair his car. On the M4 doing 70ish it just lost power and a message came up saying "Engine System Failure" so he pulled over onto the hard shoulder and checked to see what was wrong, the engine never stopped. He started going again and the same thing happened when he got to about 35 to 40mph so he stopped again and turned the engine off. He then notice the service message said Serv -500 or something similar. He started the engine again all seemed fine until he got to 35 to 40mph again when it lost power again so this time he called it a day and I got it recovered to Rockar at Bromley By Bow.
The latest from them is it needed a software update and a service.
Any thoughts would be really appreciated.

A service does not sound logical, neither does a software update. You shouldn't lose power because of that.

Morning All,
Thank you for your thoughts, here is Rockar's answer to why it went wrong.

Good morning Mr Townrow

Thank you for your email.

The fault data recovered from the vehicle was logged in the Powertrain Control Module which explains why it showed an engine system fault. However this particular fault code is usually seen in much colder temperatures.
Interrogation of the fault code with Land Rover diagnostic equipment pinpointed the need to carry out a reconfiguration of the existing Powertrain Control Module.

In my opinion, the service light is a coincidence.

The vehicle is designed with 'limp mode' function, which your son experienced, so in such an event the vehicle can be driven safely, albeit slowly, to the hard shoulder.

With your permission I will be sure to have the vehicle thoroughly test driven once the service is complete to allay any remaining concerns that you may have.
Kind Regards
