Hi,
I have a RR p38 2.5 Diesel. Recently it's been having lots of starting problems. For instance when hot it will start all day long. Spray abit of easy start down the intercooler and it will start with about 15 seconds of turning.
But if either of the above are done it will almost flatten the battery and often does not start.
What does this sound like? Is it the glow plugs? Dont think it is a fuel issue as fuel is not draining back. Glow plugs were replaced about 3 months ago. Britpart? maybe they are no good.
Could it be the injector pump? Once started it drives perfect!

What you guys think?

Does it make any difference how much fuel is in the tank. A tank over about quarter full will mask a failing in-tank pump.

What make were the glow plugs? If you don't know, or it didn't say, replace them with Delphi or similar. Regardless of their age.

The leak-off pipes are least likely as, if they are leaking, they should give you hot start issues as well but they're so easily replaced, and so cheap, it's worth doing.

STOP USING EASY START. Your engine can become addicted. Don't ask me for the science but talk to any old timer who knows his engines.

In-tank fuel pump
glow plugs
injector leak-off pipes

engine addicted to easy start

I replaced the leak-off pipes recently however maybe they have been clogged with dirt...

I was used a very dirty fuel.
Even with half a tank it still struggles to start so maybe that rules out the fuel pump?

Last potential problem and most likely cause it starts when hot is the glow plugs?! It seems to almost start as if it is catching in one cylinder or something.

Glow plugs are thoes from birtpart. So I assume thats the make. Only used easy start twice try to avoid the stuff as best i can.

Dont think it's the fuel return lines as they're only new. Any checks I can carry out?
thanks

Britpart = ****part, 3 months is about the normal life for cheapo glowplugs. BERU and NGK are Ok as well as the ones you mentioned. If you have been using dirty fuel, have you looked at the fuel filter and checked the flow from the in tank pump?

Get a multimeter onto the wiring connector on top of one.

Before you ask - the glow plug relay is the big one behind the battery (from the front).

Have you got a copy of RAVE?
If not can I suggest that you get one. I think that your best way would be to buy the EAS lead and software from DATATEK on here. You WILL use it one day. Not only is he cheaper than ebay he puts a copy of RAVE onto the disc for nought.

Might I suggest that you put your location into your details. You'd feel a right berk if you found that another more knowledgable P38 owner lived round the corner from you.
