I'm far from being ****ed. This is a good solid car apart from the obvious rot. There's plenty of well-tried weld repairs that can be done here and I shall do them DIY.

Personally, for me its looks too far gone

But look at some of the restorations completed by members on here and its definatly possible

Keep an eye out at the local car boot sales.............last time i found some big boxes of time and a couple of pallets of patience....you'll need them

Thank you folks for the encouraging words. I've mended a few rot boxes (1980s Jaguars) and believe that the rot here can be done DIY, without having to buy replacement panels. But we shall see.

I didn't put that panhard (?) bolt the easy way in because, strangely, I wanted to keep this original and put it in as per original (i.e. the awkward way). This involved jacking the car chassis high up to get the holes to line up (with jiggling the steering a bit).

I've to get Steve the former owner to drive this to my friend's place where I can repair it. In its current state it has no MoT so Steve'll have to drive it on his motor trader plate. In due course when I embark on welding repairs I shall post my progress here.

Did the factory originally put it in that way, or was it just that way in when you found it?;)

Ya are but good luck trying.Shame the vm is pants, hence why no other landy has got em and the tdi went into the rangies later on.Keep the pictures coming and we'll try to help where we can.
 
I paid Steve 440 bobs for it, but he wants to swap the glass tailgate for another (slightly tattier one).

I've just realised that the VM 2.5lt is not the same as the 200TDi. Steve swears by the VM engine and general press is that it's way under-rated. There's a chap off eBay who's offering me oil filters for the VM for £6.50 inc p&p. I might get these bulk off him.

listen teddykan,you have been told by very knowlegable bods on here that the VM is a load of crap,thats why no other landy is using it.take their advice and get rid of it,or dont buy it.steve is just trying to offload it mate.
 
I'm content with the purchase as the remainder of the car is good. It's also to maintain good rapport I have with my garage - Steve is sad to see this one go but I reassured him that this will return to his hands for maintenance, repairs and testing, so he'll still see it.

I value the rapport I have with my garage. We help each other out on all sorts of things relating to cars. This is how it used to be when you bought a new car - you bought into a long term relationship with the garage for the life of the car. It served both of you well. To have it today is rare.

Look, good luck...but harking back to the good old days is a bit naive..garages today charge a bloody fortune, matey as he may be, he's got overheads beyond his control..

As for a long term relationship..buy a budgie...it also squeaks constantly and then dies.

whats all this talk about STEVE, apart from offloading a scrapper onto some poor unsuspecting bloke for the price of a fully T&T motor

i would be more concerned about getting a good deal and not getting ripped off instead of keeping someone else happy during a sale:rolleyes:
 
I asked my garage to drive my Range Rover to my friend's place a few miles away so I can work on her in peace. I washed her a bit for the short journey, see pics. En route her clutch failed - Andy the grease monkey is quite skilled at changing gear without clutch so got it there OK. I then decided to work on the clutch cylinders - both were shot, see pics. I've since bought new ones but intend to clean up the bores of these existing ones, fit new seals, and then keep as spares. Judging by the state of the clutch fluid, it looks like it's never been changed in its life (it's dark brown and with sticky, shot-like, sediments.
