Your points at the end pretty well sum up my thoughts, an extra point though would be to prime the base board with a dilute PVA sealer first, the day before if poss.
When I did mine with the help of the doris, we put down a large dust sheet in the middle of the living room so as not to need to kneel on it.

The use of PVA solution sounds a good idea, I didn't think of that, it certainly helped to prevent soak up when we plastered and repainted the ceiling in our living room the other year. For sure, the use of a dust sheet would help to stop Mrs Carver being too upset
