After a recent long drive i have noticed a ticking / tapping when I slow down in 1st, 2nd or 3rd gear, especially when using the engine to slow down. It disappears completely when in 4th gear or when the clutch pedal is depressed. I can hear this noise in neutral also but alot quieter and becomes silent when i depress the clutch.

If I put into low range i hear this noise ticking in every gear except 4th (when driving & slowing, louder when slowing down in gear) . Again it stops if i depress the clutch - i hear the ticking/tapping slow down & then stop. I can hear this noise when in neutral (transfer box &/or main box) also but quieter and becomes silent when i depress the clutch.

It sounds like its coming from transfer / gear box /clutch area.

Does this sound familiar to anyone? Any ideas would be great.

Thanks James, reading through previous post i have seen one mentioning lay shaft bearing. I have searched but can't find what a 'lay shaft' is, the nearest i got was a shaft in the main gearbox. And why would this be quieter when in 4th gear but not the other gears?

Can you give me (or point me at) any more information?

in the gear box you have input shaft which on inside has a gear (constant pinion)which drives lay shaft which sits below it drinve goes through this to above 1st 2nd and 3rd gear on mainshaft which sits in line with input shaft and has bearing between the two,the mainshaft goes right through to the back of box and has 5th and sometimes reverse in extension housing before going out of rear where its splines drive transfer box ,all gears 1,st ,2nd,3rd,5th,rev,are driving through input ,to layshaft to mainshaft and out except 4th gear which isnt a gear in itself but the connection on input shaft to mainshaft and out ,even though layshaft will still be turned through constant pinion there is now no torque going through it so a noisy brg or worn tooth on layshaft will not be as noisy as in other gears when actual full engine torque is put through and on to bearings

Thanks for the explanation.

I understand what the layshaft is now, but i don't understand how a worn bearing would create a clicking/ tapping sound which is much louder when slowing with the engine. I would have thought a worn bearing would make a rumbling/whirring noise similar to wheel bearings.

Sounds bad ... is this an easy job to replace the bearing, once i have got the box out?

It could also be the bearing between the first motion shaft and the main shaft as in 4th gear they are both turning at the same speed

cant you live with it? or is it real loud?

b/l on landys are not known for being quiet anyway. what box is it btw?

i presume its lt77 on classic as if is easy enough job but nearly impossible without special pullers for seal collar ,5th gear off layshaft and 5th off mainshaft, you would need to find someone local or end it to someone like me that would/could repair it or go for recon ,a p38 gear box would be easy enough to do for someone as no special tools necessary
