Also, as it's a conversion, check that the auto-box has been re-set for the different (speed/revs) gear shift specs required for a diesel.

Not having owned (or desired) a diesel version I can't answer that but I suspect if it hasn't been modified there will be variations to the normal (for the V8) upshifts, ie 2nd to 3rd (light throttle) at 28/30 & 3rd to overdrive at 50/52. Hopefully someone with a factory diesel can give you the correct specs.

FWIW, unless you NEED a diesel for some reason, I'd go for a V8 on LPG. The V8 is a lovely engine and on LPG will be as cost effective to run as a diesel. Insurance is bugger all on them, even a V8 - I'm 27 and insured my old V8 Classic for £200 TPFT as a second car through Adrian Flux.

I'm in a similar situation to you but am after a diesel, but only because I want to drive round the desert in Morocco and diesels are better in extreme heat - if it wasn't for that I'd be getting a V8 on LPG straight away!

thing is its a 3rd car for me, no lpg garages really local, and insurance on a 4.8 v8 probably is not doable as a 3rd car

spoke to insurance today, should of asked about an lpg, but a 2.5 diesel classic or a defender 90, is a straight awap over for the admin fee, and when re newal in december i think will be around £180 for the year

only had a driving license just over 2.5 years so quite a new driver, im totaly not fussed about the engine and speed/power etc, its just cheaper for me to insure a diesel and to have as a 3rd car, and saves lpg aggro and putting petrol in sometimes etc etc

plus, i think as they are becomming more rare etc,a nice original diesel one , would also be a good investment etc than an lpg and nicer in that original sense ?

but its whatever comes along locally really not too far away, a lot of lpg are miles and miles away

There are quite a few LPG stations in and around Portsmouth.
Since getting my replacement daily runner, a V8 with LPG, I've uploaded the 'points of interest' application on my TomTom sat Nav, and to be honest, I was suprised how many there are. Most LPG convertions will still have a reasonable size petrol tank too. Mine will do about near 70 miles on petrol before the low fuel warning light comes on.

Test drive a diesel RRC, then test drive a 3.5 or 3.9 V8 RRC. You wont be saying a diesel is nicer....honestly!......If ya can find one, try a 4.2 LSE if yous need the extra legroom in the back seats.
...and if you want an investment, either don't buy a car, or go for a very early 3.5 V8 2 door in as good a condition as you can find....the prices of them are far more likely to hold steady, maybe increase, as the years go by.

thing is...INSURANCE !!! i cant get the cheap insurance on a v8 petrol like i can a 2,5 diesel , which costs me penuts, and as its a 3rd car..the whole reason i bought one in the 1st place

id like an lpg v8, but its not really viable, if it was to be my main and only motor then i would
