Hello all,

[Sorry if there is any recent gearbox threads but i couldnt seem to find any!]

I have a 94 200Tdi RRC.

The manual gearbox has lost 5th gear!! It happened when I was driving along a nice country road put my foot down a little in 4th, went to change up to 5th and there was just no drive from it. (just revs!!)

It is not a case that it the gear stick wont engage into 5th (I.e. seeming like something blocking it, which actually has happened before and was remedied-It was a foreign object that had lodged itself in the way if i remember correctly). It is almost like where 5th gear should be there is just a blank space!

Coupled with this there is now a whuring sound. The whuring sound is present even when stationary and depressing the clutch mutes it slightly.

Any ideas what this problem is? (The car is driveable but just without 5th gear...which reminds me, is it wise to be using it for short local trips??) I am a fairly competent DIY'er but have never dug into, what i see as, the complex workings of the gearbox/transmission before.

Dont know if this is relevant, but the gearbox was actually replaced 10 years ago!?

Many thanks

Dom

It has been suggested to me that the loss of 5th gear could be a worn selector fork? Is it likely to have worn or broken off? Some of the other gears are quite difficult to engage sometimes.

I was told that if this is not the case, and worst case scenario it is a recon box. I was also tole that if it is a problem deeper than the selector forks I would have to remove the gearbox from the vehicle (which is a heavy problem in itself!) Is it possible to remove just the transfer box and be able to see whats going on, and if need be change the selector from there?

cheers

was goin to say the same as above. i common fault on 5speed boxs is the selector rod just snaps when it feels like it. had the same problem with the sdi 5 speed and mt75 ford gearbox. can be repaired, but best to gat another box.

best to get another box? Is it difficult to change then? What did you do when yours snapped?
My gearbox is about 10 years old now but if the selector can be changed without to much grief by taking off the transfer box and replacing it wouldn;t that be worthwhile?

yes you can change the selector rod if that is the problem. you will still have to drop the box to do so. when mine snapped on the old v8sdi i left it as it was so quick like that and i wasnt bothered. when i used to race the old fords we had the same problem as well as jumping out of 2nd on the over run. but gearboxs were so cheap i just replaced it. now if you drop the box and take the cover you will see inside when moving the gear stick if the selector rod has snapped. ive never done a 4x4 box, so i cannot offer any more info at the mo.

okeydoke. I think I may still have a go at seeing if I can change the selector.(if thats the problem mind you!) Glad to know that you continued using it even after this happened as I had no idea if I should drive the vehicle anymore after it happened!? Still not entirely sure if I should be!

Guessing that stuff would have to be removed anyway if I was to change the box so may aswell have a go at replacing the selector. Whilst I havent studied it in detail yet the Haynes manual doesnt seem to be very usefull.

bloke on here called RATTY he seems to have alot of knowledge on rangies, plus some others as well. so im sure you will get more answers later. try a search on this forum for gearbox problems and see what it comes up with. it worth a shot.
