Hi all. Hope you are all keeping well. Just a quick question on the Britpart coil springs. I want to freshen up my tired rusted springs and was wondering if any of you tried the Britpart black springs. I don't want the much too hard yellow ones as I want a softer ride. The black ones appear to come in a medium load rating and also give a 1inch lift which I would like. I know the costlier brands are better but I'm on a tight budget which I have to stretch to new shocks as well?

Thank you for that Ratae…..Some very helpful info there although bar thickness would help so as I can make a comparison with the springs I am currently running on. There are so many options. Makes getting my choice right such a daunting task....
 
I thought Police spec was hard to carry the weight of all the gear they carry?
Yes that is true they're harder but the ride was still comfortable..

i got motion sickness with the stock springs, and when loaded up even with a light load the arse would be much lower than the front..
Most Boge units are worn out and are hard/expensive to rebuild/replace so Police spec springs are an answer.. ;)

I tried a brand new Classic in the 80's, it gave me motion sickness, then the gear lever came out in my hand so I bought something else.

I have used Britpart springs, standard all round, on a Ninety.
No problem with them at all. Don't see why it should be any different on an RRC.

You bought an XJS i'm sure you mentioned once?

I found the Classic a nice thing to look at, one of the bucket list cars, but it got old after my brother barfed down my neck..
Wallowed badly around even the slightest of bends, uprated springs helped..

Almost bought a 2.4VM one last month, in Alaskan blue, same as my Dads old one, missed it by £50..
 
When I was actually using mine (boge was missing when i got it) it didnt seem to corner any worse than my parents 200tdi disco (which was perhaps 6 years old at the time). Guess it's how you drive it really, it should be driven like a land rover not a car.
I used to put 15 bags of calf feed in the back weekly and it did sit lower of course but it wasnt bottoming out.
 
Police spec rears are fine. Bit firmer but not unpleasantly so & probably the way to go if you do a lot of fully laden and/or towing.

As a young lad I had a little side business working on classics for people, in my drive at weekends. One of the most common jobs was suspension mods. For those who wanted a little lift and a little firmer ride without being silly, I would take the rear springs (150 lbs/in) and fit to the front (either new or the rear springs from the car) and then fit 180 lbs/in springs to the rear. It is a good combo and may mean only having to buy one new set of springs and not two.

A trick for getting them in and out easily as well, jack under the axle, undo the keeper plate, remove the shocker, then tie the spring as tightly as you can with light wire or thin nylon rope, two places opposite each other. Support the chassis, let the axle fall away and the spring will basically fall out. Saves having the fiddle with spring compressors on the car. When replacing, do the same to the new spring on the workshop floor, using compressors, tie it up, put it in the car and when the weight of the vehicle is on the spring, cut the wire/rope.

As a side note, I used to give the old front (133 lbs/in) springs to a local community organisation who used them to build playground equipment, specifically seesaws using a spring in the centre as opposed to the traditional pivot.

LOL My RRC is from '87, runs genuine LR coils & dampers, fitted a few years ago when I could afford them & has been retro-fitted with LR's handling kit. If I push the old girl (rarely) it corners like it's on rails without giving a harsh ride.
nb I had your gearlever scenario with a Series 3 during off-roading, the lever snapped off near the base as I was changing gear :eek:
