Hi, i recently bought a range rover classic and it seems to be overheating (the temp gauge almost goes to red) after driving for about 15 mins, i have let all air out of the system, i think its time to flush the coolant. Does anyone know what type of coolant it takes?

thanks

Check the thermostat is opening and yes the radiator could be blocked either internally or externally.
I'd use the traditional green antifreeze, it doesn't have the long life of newer stuff, but that's an excuse to drain and flush more often

On your driveway open the bonnet, start from cold & allow to warm up at idle.
Keep checking the top hose. If it warms up slowly in line with the rest of the system the stat is either missing or stuck open. The top hose should suddenly get hot as the stat opens.
Check radiator for cold spots - signify internal blockages. Flushing might be worth a try.
Replace the stat with a good quality item, not an ebay cheapie. Ensure the bleed hole is at 12 o'clock.
Might be worth replacing the temp sender although IME a dying one either doesn't work at all or the temp shoots off the top of the gauge so if it holds steady it's likely OK.
Is the right temp stat fitted?

probably the water pump. cheap as chips. change it. while you do it replace the s stat, run it with water first then when you know its not overheating flush it out a couple of times, then replace the coolant mix. IIRC its the green mix on those.

I had this same problem on my (then) recently purchased RRC on it's first motorway journey ... a replacement radiator cured it.
nb. interestingly with the intro. of EFI in late '85 the V8's fan gained 4 extra blades, perhaps the original 7 blade was a bit marginal ?
