Just recently that my rpm counter sometimes stops working when i have a lot of appliances working, i.e wipers, heater and headlights.

Then I hear a squeel from the alternator belt aswell.

Can anyone shed some light on this?

cheers

Belt is slipping under load. Rev counter is driven from alternator if it ain't going round it won't work.

somehow the alternator is what runs the rev counter so that is your problem, if its not the belt slipping I guess it would be the bearing and time for an alt rebuild or a new one.

Ok thats great, I had the same problem about 6 months ago so fitted a new belt. Now its starting again so your probably right, new alternator or rebuild.

Cheers anyway

If it is slipping under load that means it is working fine, all you may need is a new pulley they get worn and the belt slips.

So you think the alternators fine and just needs a new belt? Any specific belt makes you can recommend? I just used a normal alternator belt from mm4x4 last time.

Belt yes, but i did say pulley, if it's one of those multi groove things they wear out and get shiny. If the pulley is worn it will knacker your new belt up pretty quickly. Any good quality belt.

Yes you maybe right, it could be the pulley if its worn the belt out quite quickly thus spinning and not charging.

Any ideas on where to get hold of a new pulley?

Your pulley might be out of alignment with your alternator. A mate of mine went through 3-4 belts in a very short time due to this. Solution was to put a spacer washer behind the alternator to realign it and seems to have done the job.

Have a look down and see if they are aligned properly.

Anywhere that does refurbs. Don't know where you are, but around here it would be Ribblesdale auto electrical. They would definatly have one. You can Google them for a phone number. They will need alternator part number/vehicle details to supply one. The out of line post also makes sense be sure to check that.
