:confused: hi, my 3.5 1987 efi hase developed a problem, she starts fine from cold but after a run of about 5 to 10 miles she faulters and dies. this can be at a junction or even when driveing at speed. she will start again but runs rough and then dies again. just had new cam fitted by local garage,theAAman thinks it could be a sensor, can some one shed some light on this problem , any advice wellcome thanks.........
 
My 3.9 was doing the same thing, i made sure all my parts where changed too genuine ones, rotor arm, dizzy cap, leads, then it nearly fixed the cutting out, then i changed the CTS (coolant temp sensor) and after a couple of runs, the old girl is running great.
Good luck, also do a search on the site for the same problem, there's loads of threads on it i'm sure

thanks for the info DC,i thourght it may be the ECU at first but as you are the second person to say it could be CTS i will go with that first,thanks again uncle munkle.......
 
Pull the connector of the cold start injector and see if it continues to do it. If it sorts the problem, then its the thermotime switch.

Changed the CTS in mine to sort a cold running issue a few days ago and so far it seems to have done the trick. It's a pretty cheap part so it's well worth doing first before you do anything drastic.
If he changed the cam, it may be worth getting the timing double checked by the garage who did the work - just in case somethings off. Off the top of my head, 87' efi should be timed to bang on TDC.
 
The thermotime switch controls the cold start injector and if its faulty the cold start injector squirts extra fuel into the plenum chamber causing rough running and excesive fuelling problems. Unless its really cold the engine will start without the cold start inlector so by disconnecting it and the problems stops it has to be the thermotime switch which is situated next to the CTS.

I had the same problem and fixed it by disconnecting the thermo time switch, it means the engine takes a slightly longer time to start from cold but now runs smoothly and more economically
 
does it change gears smoothly or do they hang on and judder. could be a worn camshaft, as i advised someone else on here yesterday
 
I had the same problem with my 1987 Rangie I fixed it by disconnecting the thermo time switch, the engine runs a lot more smoothly at all temperatures and speeds but takes a couple of seconds longer to start. if cold starting is an issue replace the thermo time switch. also check the cold start injector to make sure it is not sticking in the open position this will give a rich fuel mixture.
