Hi all new to the 4x4, so go easy with me. i know this is a land rover forum and i do own a land rover 1.8 petrol :-( "I Know"

but i need a little advice, im looking at buying a range rover tp use off road and have found a cheapish one

Range Rover P38
Year 1996
Engine 3,950 cc
Petrol

it looks good, its a good price, but there is a small problem basicly the car fail its mot last year, which turned out to be a slipped block liner. Another Range Rover was purchased that was fitted with a genuine Land Rover re- conditioned engine. Engine then removed and fitted to this car along with a full exhaust system, Cats, clutch ,battery and air pump. it ran for while ok then was left over winter 2009/2010. when started last week it started but would not rev smoothly or at all but it ticks over ok.

Should i avoid it or could it be a simple fix any help would be great

Thanks in advance

Daryl

Also forgot to mention my darling partner ran the land rover out of petrol just after christmas and this hasnt started since , could it be just dirt in the filter injecters etc.

Please dont mention head gasket, every garage says this ha ha

You already have a k-series freelander, and now you want a P38. Whats next on your shopping list...a straightjacket. You're mad.

ha ha are they really that :Dbad when we got the land rover it only had 45000 miles 1 old lady owner from new the service history told us that the head had been done at 37000 and we have now done 57000, touch wood we never had no problems with it until she ran it out of petrol.

As for the range rover i guess its more hassel than its worth by the comment ha ha

You've hit the nail on the head, if you want an off-road toy with a bit of comfort then get a Disco, a lot more reliable and a lot easier to put right if thing's break. As Howardo said if you're not already going mad after buying a petrol engined Hippo then a P38 will definitely send you loopy

so you want to go off road but you know nothing of the vehicle youve already chosen?
P 38s arent great for off roading cos they are complex, expensive to fix and there are very few mods for them. They are capable enough but maybe a disco would be better

P38s are quite capable, when I used to take mine out I was getting through places on Scorpions where a couple of discos on ats were getting stuck. Maybe because i used the rule "if in doubt floor it" :D :D

Discos are generally much better off road than p38s though. For the one described I would certainly want it more than cheapish and if its an off road only toy your after then a series, disco or rrc would be a better way to go.

goin from a gaylander to a p38...

thats like gettin rid of herpes and getting another s.t.d

seriously..the p38 will empty your wallet very quickly
