Hi all – I have a 2000 Range Rover 2.5 DSE –
it has been running fine however I have developed severe erratic idling / hunting causing the car to rock when stationary.
It transpired that one of our guys at the yard had taken it upon himself to top up from a jerry can in the yard rather than stop at a garage … the diesel he poured in had been drained from an old boat we were working on and it was horrendously contaminated …. I poured out the remainder and it was cloudy and waterlogged.
I have run it on two tanks of clean diesel and changed the fuel filter however the problem persists. Can anyone suggest what damage may have been caused and any remedies ….

sorry to hear it...........happened to me last year..some charlie put in a can of diesel hanging around the yard....of course it was waterlogged.....so only option was removed the tank....cleaned it out completly....final wipe out was with kitchen roll , so clean clean.......took pump unit apart....cleaned and flushed it all out....and flushed out the fine mesh filter......removed fuel filter from engine compartment and blew out the lines......refitted new filter and refitted tank and pump unit........refilled with clean diesel,,opened injector feed pipes....and turned engine over for a few mins till clean diesel at injector tops......tightened up injectors,,,,and pronto......took it for a run localy messed about it little then settled down....since then no probs...........oh.......you will be amazed how much **** a stuff is in your tank and filters..................to me that is the only way to sort it........................good luck

Thanks guys – it seems to run well at speed but still playing up at idle. I looked when it was last hunting (seriously jumping between 800 and 1000 rpm ...) and there was thick black smoke ..?? checked air filter was ok. I guess I’ll start from the back and work my way through the fuel system as suggested .... I’m worried I may have screwed up the injector pump ..?? hopefully it will only cost me time and a set of injectors at the end of the day !! thanks again

Thought I'd cured it .... ran with some Kerosene in Fuel to get it to burn hotter and then reved up and held at 5000 rpm until black smoke cleared ... ran as smooth as anything on idle and when driving ... the next morning it was back to it's old blipping again between 800 - and 100 rpm on idle .. aaarrrggggggg ... calmed down a little when hot ??

Try disconnecting the vacuum pump for the EGR. If that improves it then blank off the EGR inlet with a 5p coin.
