I was wondering if the timing chain guides had failed locking the engine. The vehicle had everything it ever wanted which is very well documented mate by your good self.
I've never heard of the M62TUB44 engine crank failing unless the guides went locking the engine if the timing went out.
real shame though

A failed crank on the M62 is almost unheard of, after many many years of owning M62 powered Bimmers and the L322, I have never come across on any forum a snapped crank on one of these....one of the BMW diesels (can't remember which) was known for it...but the M62 is built like a tank.

The earlier M62's were known for oil pump issues, they worked loose.....looking at the photos on the advert, there is oil splashes in places, which could indicate oil pump issues, or the timing chain guides failing and dumping into the sump only to lock up the engine.

I feel so sorry for the guy......I spent tens of thousands on that car over the nearly 5 years or so I had her, it was just the final bits she needed that he was looking into doing as I had run out of cash what with a young family now.....I am just so gutted!

I seem to remember him saying that it was still running but making a racket. He even posted a YouTube video of it.
Sounded more like big ends to me.

I'm gutted for you mate. I think most of us, who followed your adventures with her, had a little emotion invested in her. It's a sad end to an epic journey :(

As its not far from me i was thinking of pulling the sump off for him to see what was going on in case it was just the guides.
i think with these big complicated old engines you can become at one with it over a period of time and you tend to pick up on any little tell tale signs of impending problems before they turn nasty but you don't normally get much warning with the guides i wouldn't think

It would be fantastic if he had some help and was willing to accept it.
He must be miserable after all he did to it.

My bad ....
Quick then back to somewhere near the original transmission thread with a picture of a tranny on a defender ( i never miss an opportunity to bring out this photo of Alan)
