Hi all, I bought a 2005 freelander 1 td4 3 doors 2 months ago and since one month, engine starts failing. Symptoms are random idle rpm, engine stall when gearbox lowers a gear.

At today I have changed the following:

- MAF
- Air filter
- Injectors (was changed by the old owner 2 month before selling)

Please if you could help me with some information about what to do I will really appreciate.

Best wishes

Here is a video with the failure

Have you got a diagnostic that you can check the HP fuel pressure value?

Might be worth checking the connection to the fuel rail pressure sensor. These have weakness in developing corrosion, which can lead to erratic behaviour. Any signs of green on the terminals indicates a problem. If you search overlay harness on here, it will come up with some more threads on the subject.

Hi, I don't have a diagnostic tool to check it. I have the Hawkeye total, but don't read engine computer. A friend of mine tell me to check the PCV. My doubt is if I can run the engine without it to check how it runs. Do you if I can?

Best wishes.

You can't run the engine without the PCV, as the top of the PCV assembly also seals the crankcase. Your best bet is to get a replacement PCV if it's not been changed in 12 months.

However I will suggest the running issue is unrelated to the PCV, and more likely to be the rail sensor connections as suggested above.

is there a problem with the cable ? .. or the obd socket ?

are you unsure how to use the Hawkeye 'total' ??
if so .. let us know ..

Hi folks, finally, the issue was fixed, with a very rare solution I think.

First of all, the car will be parked until I change PCV module, diesel filter and thermostat.

What I did to fix it:

- Change MAF.
- Change air filter

*****At this point, the freelander still shows the fail, but reduced. The trip of the gauge on tachometer was reduced, but still was there. So, I start thinking wich could be failing, and I check all the oils. And that was the surprise, engine oil was a cr*p. After that, I wake up on saturday and take another car to buy new oil.

Then, I changed the oil and filter and like it was magic, the issue was fixed.

Now waiting for pending spares to change them and enjoy the car.

Hope this could help others with the same issue.
