would putting a scooped air intake on the engine air intake hole help with engine power or anything? if it did, would it hinder fuel economy?

talking about a 97 swb 300tdi

if you've tried this or know someone who has and you have an answer, i'd be grateful
 
yeah i was thinking snorkel but i dunno, i think they look pointless unless on a proper off-roader one, mine's just a day to day car

No.
 
Ramming air into the intake of a na engine helps, unless you can ram it in faster than the turbo can suck it in then. its just for show.

If you want hing more power try a bigger intercooler
 
You would be hard pushed to ram air in even at motorway speeds, cool air though will help power as it is more dense and fills the cylinders better, cold air also improves the fuel burn in a diesel so yes do it:)
 
a ram wont but go faster stripes are scientifically proven to increase your power output by at least 17%
 
ok thanks landowner, i thought cold air was a good thing but i wasn't sure why. now the problem's where to get one, haven't seen a single one so far online
 
Sorry to hi-jack this, only slightly off topic since it has been mentioned - will the scoop really help the asthmatic heater?
Mines like a gentle breath of warm air, and winter is approaching!

Have you flushed your coolant system? and checked?changed your thermostat, and have a grill closer flaps
 
I have one for my heater and it does make a difference, but as already advised if its that crap check cooling sysytem thermostat and seals around the heater matrix, not unusal for the seal to be missing and the matrix full of mud so very little air flow over it
 
Theres loads of posts on improving and checking the heater is working right. Its not the best heater in the world even when in tip top condition. If checking your heater don't forget cables sometimes get out of their clips behind the sliding controls on the side of the dash. I have a scoop on the wing for the heater and I think it does help.

mine has good flow even with the fan turned off :D

I used to have one of those but took it off as it wasn't needed. Flow is fine and was improved massively once I'd fully sealed the heater. Even with it turned off I get too hot at times and need to open a vent or a window but I won't be complaining in winter ;)
