hi all took a chance today put new battery in radio came back on without code

The factory radio was coded and so would generally need the code entering. However an aftermarket radio might well work fine without a code.

When I disconnected the car battery to replace it my radio came on afterwards without the code but I believe if you disconnect the radio plugs it will require the code

Not all radios require a code.
