thick the radio under the dash in one of them universal holders, and stick the speakers up in the roof on 3/8" ply

I have gone for something completely different (well, to what I have seen anyway). Radio mounted in the dead space where the middle seat would normally mounted vertically in one of those universal holders behind my cubby box. Then I have mounted some Kenwood 6X9 speakers in carpeted boxes behind the guard between the cab and the rear. Also have my 4-in-1 12v socket (wired direct to secondary battery via a switch instead of faffing about with a cig lighter type socket thing) mouted next to the headunit so I can have my MP3 player charging up whilst plugged into stereo and if is a bouncy journey it can sit in the cubby box :) Not got any pics though yet, sorry.

A pic for you...

how do you wire in a head unit in a series vehicle, take the power from the solenoid? anyone got any pics or info on how to do this as i might give it a go this week, made an awsome speaker holder that goes in the roof, so instead of a roof inside you can just see speakers if you look up!! but not sure how to wire in the stereo!

Take power from the solenoid? Do you mean starter solenoid? Surely then it would only come on when you are starting the vehicle? Or maybe I am wrong. What you want is a permanent live (fused) and an ignition live (i.e either tap into something that is only on when the ignition is on or connect to back of relevant part ignition switch. Or if you cant be bothered with having power to the stereo on ignition only, bridge the ignition and permanent live on the stereo.

Pics are useless really IMHO opinion of how to connect a stereo up as each stereo can vary to how the ISO connector is wired up...if you have the manual for it then it will say in there (although you can normally have a good guess if you havn't got the manual, i.e most ones I have come across are red perma power, yellow ignition, brown/black earth and the ones on the opposite block are speakers).

Lets see you speaker holder :)

Can you really hear a £4 wind up radio over the noise of a Series Land Rover?

i see, thanks for advice and honesty!!! ill have a go and see what happens, when it works ill get the pics up on here for you too google at!!! have a good christmas!

I've just fitted my stereo, not even had time for pics yet, give it a day or say :D. I've put the head unit just under the dash in one of them mounting holder jobby things from halfords. with just enough space to not **** it with the gear stick, looks quite neat if I say so myself :D.
I'm using 2 6x9s which I've made 2 ply boxes for with heavy duty wire mesh over them which I've mounted behind the centre bulkhead in the corners. The wirings easy enough to hide in series 3s.

As for the power, the constant live comes striaght from the battery and the ignition live from the coil (use a multimeter to check the connector that goes off with the ignition. Mine had a free spade connector on it which was lovely.
As for all the earths, they're bloody everywhere.

I'm sure you'll rig up something good.

yes rusty rhino you can hear wind up radio over noise of a series but you must be at least 40ft away from it

Used to fit stereos for a living. For an iso fitting (which most are now) cut the two plugs off (for a series)Best to buy inline red crimp connectors.
plug 1

yellow=continuous live
red=ignition live
black=earth
blue=power to electric antena or amp(power up)

plug2
white white/black=front left
grey grey/black=front right
green green/black =rear right
purple purple/black=rear left
Hope that helps. Dont think you'll bneeding the blue wire for fitting a lecy ariel thou...unless your really flash :)

I have got my head unit just above my knees (when im sitting in the drivers seat). It took a bit of getting used to, getting in and out with out knocking it about.

I have a 500watt amp under the passanger seat!

I have 12 speakers in each door, (needed if you are to hear anything in a series)

All in all it cost about £110

Speakers £15 for the lot
Amp £40
Head Unit £40
Wiring < 15

I will try and get a picture.

Here are the speakers in the MDF holder I made that fits on each door.

This is it before it was painted and the grill fitted!

You're going to make yourself deaf my lad:) The level of noise from a diesel series Landy is only just below that which causes ears to bleed, nevermind the extra racket 24 speakers and a 500W amp could make;) I bet you've got a petrol though because I don't think the diesel engine could manage 500W

Yeah, with a mates halfords trade card my head unit and 2 decent infinity 6x9s came to about £120 with all the wiring etc and I can hear the 6x9s fine in me petrol series3.
