Evening all. Some advice please. My 52 plate D2 has a HK stereo system, which is ok, on the whole. However, I feel it’s time to replace with a trendy looking flip up unit. Up to now, the advice I’ve received from a certain motorist retailer is ‘not a hope mate’. I can’t believe this is true. Any advice would be welcomed.

That's BS mate you can fit one I had one in my other D2 what reason did they give you
for not being able to fit one??

Apparently, there’s fibre optic cabling to feed the amp. And there’s no harness on the market for the pre-amp. Cheers.

Well the pre-amp is your existing HK head unit, remove that unit and the amplifier (you have under the passenger seat I believe) will be redundant, the new ‘flip up’ unit will have its own built in amplifier, as 90% + of the replacement headunits on the market do.

The multi CD player, if you have one that is, will also be redundant, so that’s two items for you to sell on eBay.

As @discool has already said, there's the main power amplifier under the front passenger's seat and the CD autochanger under the driver's seat. There are two aerial amplifiers to consider too, the FM one is above the nearside rear side window and the MW amp is above the offside rear side window. If you have the "top of the line" HK set-up then the sat-nav aerial is in the roof mounted sharkfin fitted centrally above the rear tailgate door.
All the wiring for the ICE system on the D2 uses copper wire, no fibre optics in sight.
The plugs are standard ISO layout, but you'll find two aerial leads, a standard sized one for FM and a smaller one for MW. The audio output from the headunit is at a low level for feeding the amplifier rather than driving the speaker set directly. This can and has caused some problems for some people when they've been involved with replacing the head unit for one with more bling.
The steering column controls are analogue rather than digital and will need some sort of converter unit if you wish to retain the facilities.

I swopped my head unit and found these guys very helpful for advice on the correct adapters to connect into the standard wiring and retain my steering wheel controls.

Just spoken to these guys at Autoleads. Apparently there is an optical fibre version of HK fitted to some D2’s, with the amp fitted under the drivers seat, behind the head unit or somewhere in the rear. Mine doesn’t have the amp under the drivers seat; however there is a spare 2 pin connector under the drivers seat which I’m assuming is for the amp? I think I need to remove the radio and see if it’s fitted there.

A picture of your existing head unit and if you can find it a part number might help here.

I don't think that I can say what that plug is for just by looking at it, but that unit you're resting your hand on is the CD autochanger (Class 1 Laser Product).
If you look under the front passenger's seat you should find the main power amplifier.
I would also dispute what you're being told about any fibre links. I think that you might be giving these suppliers some incorrect information based on assumptions to begin with.

The wiring for your old head unit is simple old iso connectors, there’s nothing that special in there.

I had no problems with the existing HK amp. Just remember that it’s got a trigger wire to turn it on when the head unit is on, other than that it’s as simple as plugging in the iso connectors....

Yeah, mine is iso connectors. It’s got little multi plugs in the actual headset but it fans out to iso, usb, rca etc to plug everything into. Have fun!!
