got home today and just before stopping steam came up though the back of the bonnet, i stopped and opened up bonnet a steam was coming from back of the engine and the radiator was empty. the temp gauge was on normal and the heater was on at the time. i waited for it to cool down a bit and re filed the radiator and found the source of the leak its on the back of the engine under what i think is the feul filter(glass thingey) it was coming out of what i think was a pin prick hole in a threaded hole about the size of a 2p.its a 1977 s3 2.25 petrol.

Sounds like a core plug to me, and that one is almost impossible to replace without removeing the head. Sorry for the bad news!

thanks for the help. right then out comes the liquid metal and maby silicone, just found a replacement engine my big ends were on way out any way so gotta change it now shame i aint got a clue what im doin

Apparently there is 3 ways of doing that core plug.

1 take the head off
2 take the engine out
3 cut a hole in the bulkhead repair the plug then weld a patch in place.

Personally I went for the head off process and replaced the exhaust manifold at the same time.
