Just out of interest, cooling system 100% - no issues, but I was interested to see an "upgraded" radiator for sale for the Discovery 2 Td5. It noted that LR upgraded the radiator and this was the upgraded version! Was this installed in later D2s? Is there an easy way I can tell if I have the upgraded version? Also, can anyone tell me what the nature of the upgrade was?

They changed the flow of the cooling system.

If you have RAVE you will see that the cooling system has an extra pipe / blanked pipe on the lower edge of the rad.Whether that is what the supplier means I do not know.

Cheers

As @neilly said, I think you're referring to the modified radiator, which I believe is the only type of radiator you can get as a replacement.

I have attached some documents in a recent thread that I believe are relevant to what you're asking for - Replacing radiator - help

Did the change because of reported problems with original radiator? I still have the originally installed radiator (2003 Disco 2 Td5), so I'll see if it's the original design or the upgraded design. Makes sense that any new ones are the upgraded design.

AFAIK, LR installed the modified rad in later versions of the D2 so it depends on the VIN. The information is included in one of those TSBs.

Personally, I had the original, old type rad installed for 14 years or so and never had any problems with engine cooling or cabin heating. The replacement was the new type and saw no difference at all. And I still have to install the fuel cooler restrictor ! Mind you, both types look exactly the same so you will not be able to tell which one you have installed unless you open the cooling system and perhaps even remove the rad.

I thought the difference was an extra small bore pipe on the lower ( UK Drivers side ) of the rad.

There is a rad (PDK000080) with one small port instead of two but this is for non-Euro 3 models from 02 onward. AFAIK, this type of rad was never modified whereas the 2 port version (original and modified) can fit any TD5, even later models as long as they are Euro 3 compliant.

Based on my VIN I have the 'upgraded' version already, and when I came to replace the radiator I didn't even have a pipe connected to the blanked off radiator connection. I reckon if you take a look down past the viscous fan to the bottom connectors you'd be able to see if just one or both is connected on yours?

Unless that's another "fix" applied by a previous owner to mine...
