coincidence as it that today my son came round to my house and he mentioned his engine was running cool, even after a good run over differing roads and hills he could only reach 74c.

So we set about fitting him the inline gates thermostat that I had already got fixed into the top hose, once fitted and we bleed the system he is now getting up to 91c before the thermostat opens and once opened he is getting a constant 87c, we will continue to monitor this over the next few days and see if it is fluctuating anymore than that. Arctic2 ;)

Great stuff, but I for one couldn't get the thermostat into the hose to save my life, is your sons car a rover 75 then ? The top hose has to be different on a td4??

I would be interested if any one with an auto has fitted the aluminium type, as looking at the top hose on my 2004 auto there is a short tapered piece of hose coming from the engine into a plastic junction piece with a hose going to the the rad and another going off towards the gearbox cooler.

So, I don't know whether it would fit…

Quite a few R75 diesel owners with Auto have fitted them, I fitted to a members my pics below the plastic junction you are referring to is the same on the TD4 as on the R75 M47 engine. Arctic2 :)

Mine is like item 3 in the image, that's why I think I'd struggle to fit the remote type of thermostat…

Hi Neil.
I have just been outside to take a look and you are 100% about the top hose it is shorter in the part were the inline hose should.

With regards to the alloy thermostat I think you we would also struggle to fit it, unless someone as the proper measurements.

Cheers Arctic2 .just the info I was hoping for, I might have another go at fitting the "in tube" one but refitting the top hose back on without removing the manifold was a cow!, and at least the "Ali" one could be opened up if the thermo ever failed again, btw my heater does blow Luke warm and the gauge sits at about 10:30 ,sometimes 11 so assume the stock filter is faulty.

Many thanks Arctic2. Been thinking about doing this for a while, but wasn't sure where to start! That price is about £300 cheaper than I was quoted by a local indie to replace the original failed stat.

Having double checked on the TD4 top hose it seems that it is in fact different to the R75 one, so precaution must be taken before trying to fit the Alloy unit, the inline gates one may also be a very tight fit as the hose is a bit shorter.

It maybe that it will not go far enough into the hose :( more investigation involved I think .
 
Thanks Arctic2, my suspicions are confirmed then. I was more keen on the alloy thermostat housing as opposed to the Gates one inside the hose, don't know which hose I'd attempt to try and get it in to on that set up…

I've had a new standard thermostat sitting in the garage for quite a while, just been trying to build myself up to changing that…

Hence looking at the path of least resistance.
 
Ok then, if you think the hose diameters are the same (I know the engines are) then I will risk a punt !

Hopefully you have not purchased the unit yet as the top hose does seem to be different, in shape in diameter I do not know 100% yet also it would have to be fitted in a different position on the hose.:(

It may turn out that only OEM thermostat can be fitted ? which is not to bad a job o the FL 1 as there is more space to get to the housing

I know I am going off the thread slightly,My temperature gauge never seems to go to the middle of the gauge.
I have just been driving around urban for about 6 miles and this is what the gauge looks like,Is this normal the heater works but not fantastic.
Hi - I have just been checking the temperature gauge on a 2005 Td4 Manual, thought it worth posting the result. Using (t)rusty Haynes Manual, remove the inlet manifold, to expose the temperature gauge sensor screwed into the engine. Remove the plug and turn it over to expose the terminals. Insert a 180 ohm resistor across the terminals, then try the gauge. Mine went to 2mm below Normal on gauge, corresponding to 95C on the sensor (which is 22mm socket job). Don't short the terminals or you might well blow the gauge. You can just about do it without removing the manifold, but you can't see what you're doing.

Gauge is generally reliable. The thermostat isn't however. So if the gauge doesn't get to halfway up, the thermostat is dead.
Look for Renault thermostat mod on here. ;)
