Hi all
after trying to fit a gates thermostat into my freelander TD4 top hose and failing, I have decided to buy the other type that you cut into the top hose..
see link to the bay..

but these are made in different diameter inlets/outlets. I am assuming that the top hose is the same internal diameter along its length, but what is it ?
the gates thermo is 43mm width and that was super tight to insert so I am assuming around 40mm ish. any one know the exact size ??, I should have looked when it was off LOL

The ebay No you have given above is the correct item, we use them all the time on the R75 M47 engine.

Also the gates thermostat should of fitted yes it is hard to get in but if you use a piece of sink or wash basin out let pipe & a bit of fairy liquid to lubricate job is easy.

As you say the gates thermostat is 43mm, the internal measurement for the pipe is 36mm as you can see from the photo's attached.

As above the item below will fit into the hose, measure 3cm from the metal band, then 6cm from the 3cm mark, you will need to cut out 6cm of the hose to insert the alloy unit if you go down that road, the first cut should be at the 6cm mark making it easy to move the hose out of the way to cut the 3cm mark, use a long sharp knife if you have access to one, if not use a Stanley knife but keep the cut straight.

Also remember these photo's are for a R75 M47 engine

I would first have another go at fitting the inline gates one Again, photo's attached Arctic2

Cheers Arctic2 .just the info I was hoping for, I might have another go at fitting the "in tube" one but refitting the top hose back on without removing the manifold was a cow!, and at least the "Ali" one could be opened up if the thermo ever failed again, btw my heater does blow Luke warm and the gauge sits at about 10:30 ,sometimes 11 so assume the stock filter is faulty.

Many thanks Arctic2. Been thinking about doing this for a while, but wasn't sure where to start! That price is about £300 cheaper than I was quoted by a local indie to replace the original failed stat.

Hi when you do this mod do you leave the failed stat in the old housing and forget about it .

Yes as with the Td4 and the R75 M47 thermostat it fails open not closed, well not so much fails but opens to early therefore engine will not reach it's optimum temp.

If you were to remove the original thermostat you may as well fit a new original while you are there ;) the inline is just a quick way of doing the original thermostat job which it quite labour intensive, even more so I a R75 as you do not have the same amount of room, you will lose a small amount of coolant, always bleed the system after Arctic2

I know I am going off the thread slightly,My temperature gauge never seems to go to the middle of the gauge.
I have just been driving around urban for about 6 miles and this is what the gauge looks like,Is this normal the heater works but not fantastic.

Just because I am the worrying type Arctic, the R75 on in my link To ebay is the right one to cut into my freelander top hose ? Don't know why but I had a feeling that the Rover top hose was a different diameter .......just me being overly cautious before I spend the money.

Same engine as the R75 just a different turbo both M47 ;)
 
Ok then, if you think the hose diameters are the same (I know the engines are) then I will risk a punt !

Hi bluemax.
coincidence as it that today my son came round to my house and he mentioned his engine was running cool, even after a good run over differing roads and hills he could only reach 74c.

So we set about fitting him the inline gates thermostat that I had already got fixed into the top hose, once fitted and we bleed the system he is now getting up to 91c before the thermostat opens and once opened he is getting a constant 87c, we will continue to monitor this over the next few days and see if it is fluctuating anymore than that. Arctic2 ;)
