Do you like them? Are they bad for my car in the long run? I've seen differing opinions on the forum and on the interwebz about using the additives.

I've got a pinhole leak in my 4.2's tank and can't really afford a new radiator at the moment.

If you have the time and feel inclined I would appreciate your input on the subject to help me weigh my options.

Like Daft says, you make up your own mind on the info given.

If you can afford to cook your engine cos you leave the leak stop in too long, thats down to you.

I've known people put 2 eggs in to get them home and changed the rad and flushed all thru that weekend.

You pays your money you takes your choice.

If I was you I'd carry water to top up with and replace the rad when you have the funds but then it's up to you use it and take ya chances as has been said

It's a get you out the deep stuff 'temporary' (meaning get you home only) repair.

as an ex mechanic must say it is disgusting stuff and a nightmare to get back out once in.
Can lead to blocked heater and radiator cores. Kind of a band aid for an amputation. Best thing is just fix the issue that exists

I've used it in the past on a couple of cars, but they were only bangers.

If your rad is knackered, and you don't mind the heater packing up, it could get you another year or so without having to replace the rad.
But, if you suffer any overheating issues, sticking a can of stop leak in won't do you any favours!

A good many years ago I put a screwdriver through the rad on a Hillman Hunter which was being used as a taxi. This was Xmas Evew and the car needed to be working so we drained rD AND DRIED IT ALL OUT WITH A HEAT GUN AND THEN SLAPPED FILLER IN BIG WODGES OVER THE HOLE ON BOTH SIDES of the rad. (sorry about caps, I hit the wrong button). we then re-filled with water and put 3 packets of CeeLit in. Car was still running fine two years later when we sold it.

Thanks for the input folks. I've quizzed everyone willing to listen on this and the consensus is that there is no consensus on this. People for whom I have great trust and respect when it comes to mechanical issues have given advice on both sides. I fancy myself a logical sort (in spite of the Land Rover ownership) and I've come to the conclusion that Stinky will be put into a state of suspended animation until I can fix or replace the radiator.

I shall drive the Japanese SUV for awhile.

I know you have a radiator shop by you.Stop and see them the can put a new tank on it. My GMC 4x4 had a loose fitting on the plastic header tank where the transmission lines go and was leaking coolant new rad was like $280 and called a shop, took it there and they steam cleaned the inside out and took off old tank and pressed a new tank on $75 not bad and still working 1 yr later:D

I finally had time to take the Green Beast to such a shop today to have a look at the leak. I'm taking the radiator out this weekend and they will kindly refurbish it for $136.00. Plus I had the the pleasure of meeting Megan, who knows about Land Rovers and is as cute as a duck wearing a little hat.
