Hello All,

I hope someone out there will be able to help me.
I'm new on here and a bit new to Land Rover too.

I bought a 98 2L diesel Freelander a few months ago and love it. That was until a little while ago....

I was driving along and noticed a small plume of steam coming from under the bonnet. I stopped and saw that the header tank was empty. I waited until it cooled then topped it up with some water. By the time I got home - about five miles - it was empty again. I also had no heat and thinking about it I hadn't had any heat for a week or so.
I went to Halfords and got some rad weld stuff, poured it in, topped it up all according to the instructions and all was fine for a couple of weeks, I even had heat, then it all started again so I followed the same course of action only this time the rad weld didn't make any difference.
Since then I discovered that the neck of the header tank was fractured. I bought another, fitted it and topped up with coolant and water. Now I have no leaks and no steam but after about three or four miles or when I go up a steep hill the temp gauge goes from the normal halfway right up to the top of the red. I have to stop for a couple of minutes until it drops and then drive back slowly.
I thought / hoped it might be an airlock, when I have topped up I have opened the screw by the heating matrix but someone said that there is a second outlet under the engine cover somewhere. I've scoured the thing and can't find one. I've also left the header tank cap off for long periods to an air bubble might work its way out.
I'd go to the garage but I'm broke at the moment!

Does anyone know about the second valve or have any ideas on how to fix this?

I would be so grateful for any help with this.

Thank you.

your gonna be even broke after i tell ya this

RADWELD IS ****E, it's a temporary "get you home measure" at best.
using it as a total fix is asking for trouble as it blocks the smaller waterways in your engine and radiator.

the freelanders can be a pig to bleed anyway and you have added something to the coolant it was never meant to have. flush the entire cooling system. take the rad off and reverse flush it. throw it back together and refill it and make sure you get any airlocks out. if it don't work then you have more expensive problems.

That'll be fun for next weekend.

Thanks for the advice, hopefully that will sort it.
Do you have any idea about the second screw to sort the airlock out?

can't remember off the top of my head, been ages since i looked under the bonnet of one, one of the oil burner lads will be along and clue you in

Hi if you do a search for Rave you can download a good workshop manual and i am sure you will find the location of the second bleed screw. mine is a TD4 so i am not sure

Hope this helps
