I have a 2000 TD5 GS with what appears to be an R990 Radio plus 6 CD changer. The CD changer has died and I'm looking to replace the unit, there seem to be a host of options depending on the make of the radio.

How do I find this out, some places have the R990 as a Phillips unit, others as an Alpine, which is it?

The R990 head unit is the alpine unit or the high line.Try www.4x4cws.com.uk they are a breakers and they offer 3 month warranty on all parts.or send me a private message with your full chassis number and I can look it up on the parts software.

I've been spoilt by a single disk MP3 player in an old Rover I used to own, this had the same capacity as the Disco stacker unit also by a Music Keg in the Volvo that replaced the Rover.

So I'm actully planning to fit an aftermarket CD changer, ideally an MP3 to bost capacity for those long runs. With the odd green laning trip and some of the other muddy places I go I reckon a music keg is too fragile. But I am hopeful that a reasonably robust MP3 player will do the trick.

Hi, I have the same problem with my CD stacker. Message on the radio is "NO CD"...
Is there any repair manual on the CD stacker/radio. I have tried to dedust the unit.

I have found no evidence of a repair manual, though I think I had a similar problem when I fixed it. My technique was as follows, though I can not recommend it and this may not help.

Basically I'd got to the point where I'd resigned myself to replacing the changer, I had freed it from it's mounting and was making a note of the make and connector type to go buy a replacement.

Problem, the stacker cassette refused to eject and was hanging onto 6 of my CD's. Feeling I had nothing to loose and with £70-80 worth of CDs at stake (the stacker unit being knackerd anyway) I gave the unit a good hard thump with the flat of my hand to convince it to release the cassette and then powered it back up to activate the eject mechanisim by plugging it in again....

The CD unit started playing, it changed from disk to disk and as I type it is back in the car playing faultlessly. The only additional work I did was to shove in a CD lens cleaner disk and blow out the dust, not that there was much as the cover seems to be quite effective.

I have often joked that an essential LR Tool is a lump hammer and as I said I can't recommend this method (except as an act of desperation) but it seems on this occasion at least percussive maintenance has done the trick!

It may be that the unit had jambed with dust and a swift knock freed it, whatever the casue it's working now. The CD changer site on my earlier post offers a direct replacement and has some alternatives for MP3 changers, I haven't tried these yet but am keeping the address in case the unit pack's up again in the near future........I'll keep you posted.
