Hi all, wander if anyone can offer any advice.

Have an M rge 90, 300tdi. R380 gearbox.

For the last few weeks its been getting a bit stiff on the odd gear change, had planned an oil change etc but before I got round to it i've lost all drive.

First sympton was about a foot of extra travel on the gearlever, managed to find a gear and get home in Low box, but now I'm in 4th and cannot select anything, (clutch and transfer box still ok)

Any suggestions as to common faults? I'm gonna get it on the drive tomorow and drop the oil, obviouslya load of metal and I will be lookign for a replacement box! I've heard a few people suggest the bias springs and plate may be gone.

Am not familiar with what i'm looking for here so any help would be much appreciated!

bias plate and springs are only fitted to rrcd and disco ,defender chas turret with a spring that pushes on a cross shaft through lower gear lever ball ,if gear lever feels loose remove turret and check yoke allen screw hasnt come loose ,there is also a yoke in gear box with the same allen screw which can be got at if selector housing is removed ,probably need to put jack under transfer box and lift it a little so you can remove mounts to allow you drop box enough to get selector housing off/on,if gear stick feels fine the other common thing is the loosing of all teeth from input and layshaft pinion set ,this can sometimes still leave 4th gear as its straight through drive and isnt an actual gear like the rest, oil will tell you that plus noise

Cheers for that, much appreciated! Sounds like place to start. Loads of play in gearlever so hopefuly thats the problem.

Will try to drop the oil out today and go from there and be back on with results or more questiosn soon!

Thanks again jamesmartin

Just an update on how I got on. Before I had a chance to attend to the landrover I had to go back to work, I work as a marine engineer so have been out of the country and only just back, thus the long delay!

As you suggested James I dropped the oil out to check for teeth. Was well overdue changing anyway much to my shame i had not checked it since I bought it as I didn't have a T55 socket and kept putting it off. Lots of metal "paste" but no chunks of teeth anyway.

I then tried the yoke allen screw as suggested. Found it lieing in the bottom of the chamber! Words cannot describe how delighted I was! Boxed it all up and can select all gears as normal. Not had it out for a test run yet as the MOT has now expired and i have a few other bits to sort out but seems to have been the culprit. 5 minute job that I had worked up in my head as being a nightmare before even undoing a nut!

Many many thanks James Martin.
