I've got an issue with going from 5th to 4th - ok if I slip it into 3rd first, then 4th - had a few suggestions:

1. The inhibitor broken - although I can hear it 'clicking' when I come out of 5th . . .

2. Lack of oil - looks pretty full to me, after getting selector cover off, its upto the level of filler.

3. Problem with syncro for 3rd and 4th (have a sperate syncro to 1st and 2nd?!?!) - although I don't get any crunching when trying to select 4th, just won't go. A mate suggested if it was a problem with syncro, probably expect a certian amount of crunching, also, wouldn't I expect problems going 3rd to 4th???

Anyway, the question is, how much play should there be on the input shaft?? now i've finally managed to get the selector cover off after previous owner had rounded a lovely bolt!!! There is a brass coloured guide(?!?) through which the input shaft goes through - seems to be a bit of play here, should that be the case???

ps - anyone got any other thoughts on problem, please feel free to shout out :D

Cheers all

Is it crunching into 4th gear? If it isn't it may just be that the tab to prevent reverse being selected while on the move is in need of adjusting.

No it doesn't crunch at all to be honest - how do you adjust the tab?? I can't really see anything obvious to adjust

Cheers

I gotta be honest I've never needed to adjust the tab on one so I aint got a clue.

Try moving the gearstick to the left when you want to go to 4th and then try engaging it. If you hear a loud click/crack as the stick moves to the left and it then engages it will verify that it is the fault. If it cracks and then still wont go in without going into 3rd it will dismiss my theory.

Just posting to say that you are not alone. I have the same problem, but haven't got round to sorting it yet. Only seems to happen when the box gets nice and warm after a run too.

My old 90 used to do exactly the same thing.

General concensus after chatting to Dave Ashcroft, was the 4th gear baulk ring/synchro getting worn.
I used to have to change down from 5th, then gently nudge 3rd (to spin up whatever gear cluster needed it) then it would pop into 4th.

It started spreading into 3rd too after a while, even after I changed the oil to the all singing all dancing MTF94 stuff.

mind you, I got the box second hand back in 1995 ish, then had it in 3 of my LR's which I built and dismantled when i got bored of them, and it probably had a zillion miles on it.

sold the whole vehicle last year to a mate of mine, and eventually the input shaft snapped clean in two. apparently early R380's (which mine was) suffer from this.
