Apologies for asking about this as I think I've seen other queries on the same subject and as it didn't apply to any problems I was having at the time, I didn't take much notice (I have looked for similar threads but couldn't find anything).

The day started with removing the handbrake cable to put in a new one but now having exposed the drum brake linings it's obvious I have a secondary problem with gearbox oil leaking on to the linings. They will be replaced also but I'm having difficulty removing the large nut (I think it's 30mm) holding the propshaft flange - I'm assuming that if I could remove the flange I will find an oil seal which will also require renewal.

Any tips on removing the nut - unfortunately the vehicle isn't jacked up so heaving and grunting access is limited. Is the nut thread a normal right hand turn? Assuming I get it off, what is the tightening torque? Is the oil seal a conventional tap in with correct size socket etc or am I going to bump in to another problem? In attempting to remove the nut I've had a longish scaffold pole over a ratchet handle and I also managed to push the ratchet with my leg having wedged my back against a wall - without success!

std rh thread, seal just taps in but worth greasing the garter spring to hold in place whilst you fit it ftc4939 is the seal used front and rear , front flanges are often grooved so its worth checking

162Nm for the nut. I used a 600mm breaker bar to undo it along with a pry bar on the flange with 2 bolts in to prevent it spinning.
