I know changing the heater matrix o rings has been discussed
And a lot of people have done it
Can it be done without draining the coolant ?
I'm thinking that with the engine not running the pump will stop all th coolant draining any idears / experience ?

The Heater Matrix is below the waterline level in the radiator and expansion tank....

It is understood that you will need to drain the water below the heater matrix height beforehand.....

The coolant system is always full and the pump just circulates the flow, similar to the central heating system in your home.

Just because the engine isn't running doesn't mean gravity stops working too!!!

Thanks for that it was a shot in the dark rearly
May as well get the rad out and flush it while I'm at it

Just done mine, i took drain out of bottom of rad then when all the water had come out i blew hard down into the header tank a few times to get it all out!! But it did get the water out of the heater as when i took of the pipes off little if any water came out.
Also replace the screw with a cap head bolt as this makes it easier to do again. I had a bugger of a job to get the screw out as it was siezed solid, needed a cobolt drill and a tiny hobby grinder tool to get it out!! And i cut some of the heating vent pipes, and the grey triangle bit thats under the consol side trim ( you,ll see what i mean) to get to it!!

Sorry to high jack your thread but I now have to embark on the mission of replacing these O-rings. Ican't believe it, I've just spent a ruddy fortune on this car and now this!!! Will it ever end???
Everybody says only buy these cars with full service history, what a load of bo**ocks, everything that's gone wrong with mine in the last 6 weeks would never have been picked up during servicing. I wouldn't mind but in 6 weeks its managed to travel all of 300 miles.

Don't you feel better now that you've vented?

Remember that they are old cars and things wear out on old cars. I spent months during 2010 and early 2011 changing things like O rings, cooling system hardware, rusty brake lines, brake discs etc but now I have cracking car that has new brakes, cooling system rebuilt engine and it runs brillently, starts first time every time and has never let me down.

yes your right, I just hadn't quite banked on everything coming in at once. I'm not one for bodging and I know my limitations when it comes to vehicle repairs so I won't touch something I have no idea how to repair. Unfortunately though this philosophy seems to be costing me a small fortune at the moment as all the easy jobs I can do don't need doing!!

I don't think O rings would be a service item..!!!

But I know what you mean, even the youngest P38's are 10 years old now....so bless them they are getting on a bit....

Dave, at least u have saved fuel!!!

Got a feeling mine need doing too.....a local land rover guy has quoted me 800quid labour and 5quid o-rings!!

U are all right about all at once!! Starting to think that the monthly repair bill is getting on for the monthly finance on a brand new RR!!! (Hmmmm.....maybe I can afford one....)!!

I'll do it for £450. Mind you you might not get same joy looking at my ass as you might when looking at Andrealousia's...:p:p
