Hello

I have done a quick search but not found very much.

Could someone tell me a suitable place to tap into a live feed behind the dash that is live only when the ignition is on?

I want to hard wire my Navman satnav tomorrow.

You could wire it to cigar lighter thats position 1 or the same feed as radio thats position 1 or if you go to fuse box under steering column you will find a 3 way slot that has a live on position 2 this might have a single green wire in a brown connector if dvd or front driving lamps are fitted hope this helps,tiga
 
OK this is what I did:-

Removed the two screws holding the stereo/instrument fascia and lifted up the whole thing and propped it open.

Unplugged the plug that feeds the ciggy socket and scotch-locked into the wires to attatch my sat-nav power supply wires.

I then removed the ash tray and drilled a hole in it's base to allow me to pass the sat-nav cable through (I don't smoke by the way)

I threaded the cables up through behind the fascia/stereo bit and used a steel coat hanger made into a hook to fish out the cable and pull it up through the ashtray hole.

I then passed the wire through the hole I drilled in the base of it and refitted the ashtray now with my sat-nav cable coming up out it's base.

Put the fascia back on and screw it in place after plugging the plug back onto the back of the ciggy lighter socket.

Voila !

It took about an hour to do and it's really neat. I can put the sat-nav cable inside the ash tray and shut the ash tray lid and you would never know.
 
Thanks, I have now modded it further (3 hrs last night in the LR with a lead lamp held by my son, freezing cold) I have made a bracket out of alluminium and sprayed it satin Black and mounted the sat-nav unit onto the dash to the right of the stereo (left of the speedo binnacle)It can't be seen by passers by looking into the window now (at least from the sides). I bought a sat nav aerial and mounted it on the wing top and routed the cable through the bonnet (the gap underneath) then into the engine bay and through the grommet for the bonnet catch on the bulkhead and into the interior. Then I routed it up behind the fascia again, using a bent wire coathanger made into a hook and into the back of the sat-nav unit.

It's been a lot of phaff but it's neat and tidy and no wires showing now. It does look like a proffessional job now.

If anyone wants to do similar I would be glad to send photos or more info.
